불교에서 점복(占卜)이 다루어지는 방식에 대한 일고찰: 《점찰경(占察經)》에 나타나는 방편(方便)의 위계(位階) 문제를 중심으로 (Essay on the Way Buddhism Deals with the Divination : Centering around the Hierarchy of Upāya Revealed in Sutra of Divination(占察經))

초록

많은 현대 한국인들이 불교와 점복의 인접성을 상정하지만 사실상 점복에 대한 불교의 근본적인 입장은 ‘공(空)에 대한 이해로부터 행해지는 것이 아니기 때문에 무익하다’는 것이었다. 그러나 대승불교가 중국으로 전래된 이후 불교는 동아시아의 민속신앙을 받아들이며 대중화를 도모하는 과정에서 점복의 기술을 받아들이게 되었고, 마침내《점찰경(占察經)》이라는 위경과 그것을 근거로 한 ‘점찰법(占察法)’이라는 수행방식이 고안되었다. 점찰법은 점괘를 뽑아 그 의미를 알아본다는 점에서 전형적인 점복의 양식을띄지만, 《점찰경》에서는 점복 행위와 그 점괘의 의미를 개인의 업보에 대한 해석으로 파악하고 나아가 그 결과에 따라 적절한 참회와 수행을 권장한다. 이는 불교가 타문화의대중적 신행을 받아들이며 그것을 불교적으로 재해석하고 승화시켰다는 점에서 독창적이다.
점찰법은 불교에서 일종의 방편(方便)으로 인식되었고, 일반적으로 방편은 불교의교리 체계 속에서 낮은 위계를 지니는 것으로 간주되지만, 《점찰경》과 점찰법은 점복을방편이라는 독특한 방식으로 변용하여 수용하면서도, 그 수행 방식과 목적을 설명하는데에 불교의 핵심적인 교리를 팽팽히 끌어들임으로써 방편이 수단이면서도 목적일 수있는 길항적이면서도 회통적인 가능성을 열어놓았다.

영어초록

The divination performances have long been popular in Korea and intimately related with the Buddhist religious practices in daily life. The Buddhist divination if possible at all is not useful for understanding basic teachings of Buddhist doctrine because this divination practice is not grounded on the Sunyata(空) doctrine. But the Mahayana Buddhism, when deeply spread to Chinese soil, has been accommodated itself with the Chinese folk religions, and exerted to be popularized among the commoners.
As one of those folkloric effects was brought in and the divination skills were accepted and finally a forged Buddhist text, Sutra of Divination(Jeomchalgyeong, 占察經), was established in Chinese Buddhism. The methods or skills of how to perform divination are called ‘Jeomchal-beob(占察法)’, whose theories and guidelines are strictly based on the Buddhist text of Sutra of Divination. The Jeomchal-beob seems to be the typical divination practices in Buddhism. Whoever want to do divination firstly picks a sign and ascertains its divinatory meanings in it, the way how to interpret these meanings and accept them as one’s destinations are totally at the disposal of the Buddhist doctrinal theories. The Sutra of Divination interprets this divinatory sign as the result of one’s own karma(業) and advises to do his/her repentances and self-disciplines accordingly.
This Buddhist interpretations of divination are creative while Buddhism in general has adopted the local cultures and adjusted itself into enhancing them into universal features of Buddhism. Jeomchal-beob, a kind of upāya(方 便), has usually been treated as a low status in the Buddhist doctrinal system and uniquely accepted as a form of the East-Asian divination. One of the major Buddhist doctrines of repentance and self-discipline of Karma has been adjusted and transformed into Jeomchal-beob. So Buddhist divination of Jeomchal-beob has the dual interpretations that upāya can be retained as both the means and the goal, and the antagonistic against each other as well as the harmonious in favor of each other.
