식민도시, 전통과 근대의 이중나선－사진엽서 『京城百景(경성백경)』을 중심으로 (Colonial city, traditional and modern double helix－Focusing on photo-postcards Kyungsung Baekgyeong(京城百景))

초록

이 논문은 일제시대 발행된 사진엽서 『경성백경』(총32매, 사진, 조선민요, 일본가요 탑재)의 가치와 의미를 묻기 위해 작성된다. 이 엽서세트는 식민지 조선에 대한 소개나 관광 안내만을 위해서 작성된 것이 아니다. 일제의 우월성과 식민지 조선의 열등성을 드러내기 위한 미학적･심리적 기호장치에 가깝다. 그 이유는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 엽서의 사진과 노래는 조선의 자연 유산이나 궁중 건축 등 전통적 가치만 주목하지 않는다. 오히려 일제가 경성 곳곳에 세운 근대적 건축물과 시설, 학교와 신사 등을 집중적으로 포착함으로써 일제의 국가적 위상과 가능성을 자랑한다. 둘째, 엽서에 실린 일역(日譯)의 조선민요와 일본 와카(和歌)의 대조적인 정서와 표현에도 주목했다. 조선민요는 ‘지금 여기’의 역동적인 삶보다는 과거에 대한 회한과 슬픔의 표현에 집중되었다. 일본 노래는 식민지 조선에 대한 개척과 지배를 찬양하거나, 타자화된 조선의 수동성과 피동성을 이국정서에 기대어 표현한다. 셋째, 내선일체 및 황국신민화에 필수적인 공공 제도와 시설들, 이를테면 학교와 신사, 병영의 식민주의적 본질과 역할을 살펴보았다. 겉으로 보기에 식민권력의 요체들은 일본인과 조선인의 친선과 융화를 강조하는 듯하다. 하지만 경성에서 번창하는 퇴폐적인 유흥문화는 일제의 지배정책에 조선의 퇴폐성과 타락성을 조장하는 ‘우승열패’의 이념이 암암리에 작동하고 있음을 알려준다. 따라서 『경성백경』은 ‘꽃의 경성(京城)’을 노래하는 듯하지만, ‘칼의 케이죠(京城)’를 자랑하는 식민주의적･문화정치학적 기호로 보아 무방하다.

영어초록

This study aims to inquire about the value and significance of photo postcards published during the Japanese colonial period Kyungsung Baekgyeong (32 sheets in total, photos, Korean folksongs, and Japanese folksongs included). This set of postcards is not intended to introduce colonial Joseon(Korea) or as a tourist guide. It is closer to an aesthetic and psychological symbol to reveal the superiority of Japanese imperialism and the inferiority of colonial Joseon. The reasons are as follows. First, the photos and songs in postcards do not pay attention only to traditional values of the Joseon Dynasty such as natural heritage and royal architecture. Rather, they boast of the national status and potential of the Japanese imperialism through intensive focus on the modern buildings and facilities, schools and shrines built around Kyungsung(Seoul) by the Japanese imperialism. Second, attention has been paid to the contrasting emotions and expressions of the Korean folk songs translated in Japanese and the Japanese waka(和歌, traditional poetry) depicted in the posters. Korean folk songs concentrated on expressing remorse and sorrow about the past rather than the dynamic life of ‘right here, right now’. The Japanese songs, on the other hand, praise the pioneering and domination of the colonial Joseon or express the inactivity and passivity of the otherized Joseon by leaning toward the exotic sentiment. Third, the study has examined the colonial nature and roles of various public systems and facilities required to unify Korea and Japan as one and to turn Koreans into faithful subjects of Japan, such as school, shrine, and army. Ostensibly, the key figures of colonial power seemed to emphasize the friendship and harmony of the Japanese and the Koreans. However, the decadent entertainment culture that flourished in Kyungsung indicates that the ideology of “Winner takes it all” covertly underlies the Japanese ruling policy to promote the decadence and corruption of Joseon. Therefore, it is not far-fetched to see Kyungsung Baekgyeong as a colonial symbol and cultural Politics symbol that boasts of ‘Keijo (Kyungsung in Japanese) of sword’ although it appears to sing ‘Kyungsung of flower’.
