수평적인 것과 수직적인 것, 현대설교학에서 상상력의 문제 (The Horizontal and the Vertical: Imagination in the Contemporary Homiletic Debates)

초록

본고는 현대설교이론의 중심적 논제가 된 상상력의 문제를 발전단계와 대표적 이론들의 유형 분석을 통해 계통적으로 그리고 대비적으로 이해하려고 한다. 그렇게 함으로 문제의 성격을 체계적으로 파악하고 그로부터 논의의 한계와 방향을 잡아 보려는 의도를 갖는다. 설교와 상상력의 관계는 기독교 설교가 시작되면서부터 형성되었지만 낭만주의의 대두와 함께 그 중요성이 더욱 부각되고 그에 따른 방법론도 보다 체계화 되었다. 그러나 현대적인 맥락에서 상상력은 설교에서 다른 차원의 역할을 부여받게 되었다. 상상력은 단지 설교의 효과를 높이기 위한 스타일의 한 가지 기술적 차원을 넘어 설교 자체의 성격과 가능성을 규정하는 중심개념으로 격상하게 된 것이다.
필자는 주요 이론들을 크게 두 가지로 유형화하고 다시 각 유형을 하위 유형들로 나누어 비교분석하고 설명한다. 우선 크게 병치이론과 패러다임 전환 이론으로 대별한다. 병치이론은 말씀/계시와 인간의 경험, 문화, 역사적 요소들을 대등한 관계에서 병치적으로 연결하는 것을 설교적 상상력의 주 기능으로 본다. 병치이론은 다시 긴장을 의식하는 정도에 따라 3가지 하위유형으로 나뉜다. 패러다임 전환 이론은 상상력을 말씀/계시 및 교회의 전통과 경험, 문화와의 관계를 대등한 관계에서가 아니라 전자의 주도 아래 후자를 평가하고 방영하고 변형하는 과정으로 규정한다. 패러다임 전환이론은 딜레마의 처리 태도에 따라 다시 2가지로 분류된다. 그러나 현대의 설교적 상상력 이론들은 각각의 강조점의 차이에도 불구하고 특히 실제적인 면에서는 상상력을 상관적 해석의 틀로 보는 찰스 라이스(Charles L. Rice)의 기본명제의 범위를 근본적으로 벗어나지 않고 있음을 발견한다. 필자는 분석설명 과정에서 각 유형의 의도와 성격을 기독교 전통의 보수적 관점에서 비판하고 그 한계를 지적한다. 필자의 기본적 전제는 상상력 이론은 아무리 정치해도 하나님 말씀의 수직적 개입을 담보할 수 없다는 것이다.

영어초록

This article is to understand problems of imagination, which has become a central theme of the contemporary homiletics, in terms of their developmental stages and in terms of the comparative analysis of representative theories. The study’s intention is to grasp the nature of the problems and to identify the boundary and direction of the discourse. While the relationship between sermon and imagination had been formed with the beginning of Christian preaching, its significance was highlighted and its practical methods were more elaborated with the rise of Romanticism. But imagination has been given another level of homiletic role in contemporary contexts. Imagination is raised to the central homiletic concept to regulate the nature and possibility of sermon itself beyond a stylistic skill to promote the sermonic effects. The contemporary influential theories of sermonic imagination deals with such an aspect.
The author comparatively analyzes and explains the most significant theories through identifying and dividing their primary patterns and subpatterns. First of all the patterns are largely divided into the juxtaposition theory group and the paradigm shift theory group. The juxtaposition theory views the significant function of sermonic imagination as connecting the Word /revelation and the human experiential, clutural, and historical elements juxtaposingly with each other, horizontally in terms of the equal level. The juxtaposition theory is again divided into the three subpatterns according to the degree of the sensitivity to tension: the juxtaposition without tension, the juxtaposition in tension, and the juxtaposition already present. The paradigm shift theory defines the homiletic imagination as the process by which the Word/revelation and the ecclesiastical tradition judges, adopts, and transforms the human experiences and cultures, not in terms of the equal level. The paradigm shift theory is divided into two subpatterns according to the attitude to the dealing with dilemma: the dilemma-solving “faithful” paradigm theory and the dilemma-keeping narrative paradigm theory. From a more practical viewpoint, however, the contemporary homiletic imagination theories have not fundamentally changed the basic proposition established by Charles L. Rice, which claims the sermonic imagination as a correlative frame of interpretation. Throughout the analytic explanations, the author criticizes the intention and characteristics of each theory and points out its limit from the perspective of a conservative Christian tradition. The author’s basic presupposition is that the imagination theory, no matter how it may perfect, cannot guarantee the divine vertical intervention.
