삼국시대 사행검(蛇行劍) 일고찰(一考察) (A Consideration of the Meandering Sword of the Three Kingdoms Period)

초록

사행검(모)은 고대 한반도와 일본열도의 교류 관계를 직접적으로 보여주는 유물 중 하나이다. 본고에서는 국내에서 출토된 11점의 사행검과 1점의 사행모를 대상으로 용도와 형태적 변천·전개양상 등을 고찰하였다.
사행검(모)은 실제 전쟁에 사용된 무기(武器)라기보다 비실용 목적으로 제작되었을 가능성이 매우 크다. 『산해경』의 우사첩과 뱀의 상징성 등을 참고하면, 연안 및 내륙수로 항해 시 항해자의 안전을 기원하기 위한 제사용 의기(義器) 및 신물(神物)이었을 것으로 추정된다. 다른 한편으로는 피장자의 영생과 부활을 기원하는 의미도 내포하고 있었던 것으로 추정된다.
국내에서 출토된 사행검(모)의 시간적 변천을 보여줄 수 있는 속성으로는 신부의 형태가 있다. 초기에는 굴곡이 미미한 D형이 주로 등장하다가, 5세기 중반과 후반을 기점으로 굴곡이 많은 A~C·E형이 제작된다. 이러한 변화는 일본열도 사행검의 변화와 차이가 있다.
사행검(모)은 일본열도에서 기원한 후, 5세기 전반 무렵 왜와의 교류가 이루어지면서 연안항로를 따라 한반도에 전래되었던 것으로 보인다. 이 무렵에는 왜계 고분에서 주로 출토되다가, 5세기 중반~5세기 후반에 이르러 내륙 교통로와 가까운 재지(在地)의 고분에서 출토된다. 아마도 사행검 제작기술이 교통로를 따라 내륙으로 전파된 후, 고도의 철기 생산기술을 가진 집단을 중심으로 수용되면서 현지 제작된 것으로 추정된다.
6세기 전반 이후에는 사행검(모)의 출토 사례를 찾을 수 없어 이 무렵 매장의례가 소멸된 것으로 추정된다.

영어초록

The meandering sword (spear) is one of the artifacts that directly demonstrates the exchange relationship which existed between ancient Korea and Japan. In this paper, ten meandering swords and one meandering spear excavated in Korea were reviewed in order to examine the use, morphological changes, and development patterns of this artifact type.
It is highly likely that the meandering sword (spear) was made for non-practical purposes rather than as a weapon used in actual combat. Referring to the symbolism of the Yu Shiqie (‘Rain Master Concubine’) goddess that appears in Shan Hai Jing and of the snake, it is presumed to have been a ritual object or sacred object that was used to pray for the safety of navigators when sailing through coastal and inland waters. On the other hand, it is also believed that the sword also contained meanings of prayer for the eternal life and resurrection of the victim.
A characteristic that can illustrate the temporal changes of the meandering swords excavated in Korea is blade form. The early swords (Type D) feature minor blade curves but from the mid-5th century to the late 5th century, Types A to C and E, which feature many curves, were produced. This change is different from the change observed in Japanese meandering swords.
It appears that the meandering sword originated in Japan and was introduced into the Korean Peninsula along the coastal route as a result of exchanges with the Japanese that took place in the first half of the 5th century. Around this time, they were mainly excavated from tombs demonstrating strong Japanese influences, but from the mid-5th century, they were deposited in the tombs of local communities close to inland transportation routes. It may be suggested that these later swords were locally produced, following the inland spread of the meandering sword manufacturing technology along the traffic route, and the adoption of this technology by communities with advanced iron production technologies. After the first half of the 6th century, no cases of excavated meandering swords (spear) have been identified, so it is presumed that the associated burial ritual disappeared around this time.
