인종과 문양 - 大野雲外와 鳥居龍藏의 인종론과 시각자료에 대한 논의를 중심으로 (Race and Monyō― Focusing on The Racial Discourses of Ōno Ungai and Torii Ryūzō and Their Use of Visual Evidence)

초록

본고에서는 일본 근대기 인류학자들이 선사시대 토기에 남겨진 문양과 토기 형태를 보고 그 토기 제작자의 인종이 무엇이었는지를 추적하려 했던 논의들을 다룬다. 메이지 말기부터 다이쇼 초기까지의 짧은 기간 동안 선사시대 토기의 형태나 토기에 남겨진 문양은 인류학자들에게 그 토기 제작자들의 인종적 아이덴티티를 추적하게 하는 단서로써 간주되었다. 특히, 본고에서는 大野雲外와 鳥居龍藏라는 도쿄 인류학회의 주축이 되었던 두 인류학자의 논의를 중심으로 하여, 시각 이미지를 근거로 인종을 구별하고 판단하는 행위 자체에 대해 의문을 제기하고자 한다. 大野雲外는 도쿄 인류학 교실에서 일했던 삽화가로서, 여러 인종의 모습과 고고학 유물을 묘사하는 일러스트레이션을 많이 남겼지만, 한편으로는 자신만의 이론을 펼치기도 하는 이론가이기도 했다. 본고에서는 특히 오노의 문양에 대한 이론들, 그 중에서도 문양을 각 인종별로 나누고, 이를 비교・대조한 연구들을 중점적으로 다루고자 한다. 나아가, 鳥居龍藏는 익히 잘 알려진 바와 같이 坪井正五郞를 뒤이어 도쿄 인류학회를 이끌어 간 인류학자로, 무엇보다도 일본 제국의 확장과 함께 행했던, 만주, 사할린, 타이완, 한반도등지에서의 현지 조사로 더 잘 알려져 있다. 본고에서는 한일 병합이후, 그가 한반도에서 관찰한 조선 토기의 문양과 형식에 대한 논의, 특히 토기 제작자의 인종적 아이덴티티에 대한 도리이의 논의를 검토한다. 잘 알려진 것처럼, 근대 일본 인류학자들의 연구는 일본 제국의 확장과 무관한 것이 아니며, 특히 인종에 대한 논의는 일본 제국주의의 이론적 기반이 되었다고도 할 수 있다. 그러한 점에서 이제는 더 이상 논의되지 않는 토기의 문양에 대한 인종론적 논의를 다시 살펴봄으로써, 인종 구분에 있어서 시각적 증거를 제시한다는 행위 자체에 의문을 제기하고자 한다.

영어초록

This paper examines the ways in which the modern Japanese anthropologists investigated the specific patterns engraved on the Neolithic potteries - largely known as monyō in Japanese - as well as the shape of the earthenware, and then how they identified the racial and ethnic identity of the pottery maker. The pattern designs and formal shape of the Neolithic potteries, during the late Meiji and the early Taisho period, were considered for the modern Japanese anthropologists, as a clue to trace the racial and ethnic identity of the pottery manufacturer. My paper pays a particular attention to the two leading anthropologists - Ōno Ungai and Torii Ryūzō. Ōno was one of the modern anthropologists and illustrators who worked for Tokyo Anthropology Laboratory, and took charge a wide variety of pictures and illustrations for the Journal of the Tokyo Anthropological Association. Not only as an illustrator, but as an anthropologist, he also attempted to define the racial identity of Jōmon pottery creators, under the influence of Tsuboi Shōgoro, by investigating and comparing the patterns to those by Ainu and other races. Torii, as is well known, was one of the leading scholars in Tokyo Anthropological Laboratory, following Tsuboi, and is particularly well-known for his investigation into the prehistoric remains of other Asian regions, including Manchuria, Sakhalin, Taiwan, and Korea, which took place in conjunction with the expansion of the Japanese empire. This paper, in particular, attends to Torii’s discussion on the Chosŏn pottery where he discussed, in the aftermath of the Japan’s annexation of Korea, the forms and patterns in relations to the racial identity of the producer. In this sense, much of the investigations done by modern Japanese anthropologists were not unrelated to the expansion of the Japanese Imperialism. This paper therefore examines the process whereby the patterns from the prehistoric remains became an important evidence in identifying race and ethnicity, and furthermore attempts to raise questions about the practices of classifying races on the basis of the visual materials.
