영문 한국사 개설서의 현대사 서술과교육적 활용 방향 분석 －Michael J. 초록

본고는 미국의 한국 현대사 연구사 및 경향을 반영한 개설서인 A Concise History of Korea의 현대사 서술을 검토함으로써 영어로 진행되는 한국 현대사 교육의 의미를 제시하고, 대학 강의를 통해 한국 현대사 지식을 전달하는 것의 의미를 제시하고자 했다. 이를 위해 본고는 다양한 국적의 학생을 대상으로 영어로 진행되는 한국 현대사 강의의 방향을 크게 두 측면에서 제시하고, 이를 기준으로 A Concise History of Korea의 현대사 서술을 분석했다. 우선 한국 현대사를 이해하는 데 냉전적 관점에서 탈피하여 한반도 문제를 해결하기 위한 국제적 협조를 도모할 수 있는 관점을 형성해야 한다는 것이다. 이 책은 한국의 분단 및 전쟁, 이후 경제발전과 민주화 과정에서 미국의 정치적 목적을 제거한 채 점령정책과 참전을 강조했다. 이와 같은 서술은 한반도를 중심으로 한 동아시아 질서 내에서 긴장을 완화하고, 평화적 해결을 도모하는 데 필수적인 미국의 개입을 역사적 책임이 아닌 시혜로 바라보게 할 수 있다는 점에서 비판적으로 검토하며, 경계할 필요가 있다. 다른 하나는 근대화 및 근대국가의 형성을 최종적 목표이자 지향점으로 설정하지 않는 것이다. 이 책은 한국 현대사의 전개 과정을 근대국가의 형성과정 혹은 근대화 과정으로서 서술하고 평가하고 있다. 이와 같은 관점은 근대화를 善으로 규정함으로써 한국 현대사의 전개 과정에서 놓친 가치는 무엇이었는지 비판적으로 검토하는 데 한계를 갖는다. 무엇보다 통일을 근대국가 완수의 조건이 아니라, 근대화 과정에서의 모순으로 인식하고, 주권인식의 확대와 현재적 양상을 반영하여 그 극복 방향으로서 평화체제를 제시할 필요가 있다. 또한, 현대의 문제는 유교라는 한국의 전통적 관점에서 발현된 것이 아니라 근대화 지향의 과정에서 내재된 문제로 보는 것이 더욱 생산적이다.

영어초록

This paper presents the meaning and direction of education on Korean contemporary history conducted in English at universities by examining the contemporary history description of A Concise History of Korea, an introductory document that reflects the accumulation and trends of Korean contemporary history research in the United States. Especially, this article examines the direction of Korean contemporary history lectures in English for students of various nationalities in two main aspects, and analyzes the contemporary history description of A Concise History of Korea based on these.
First of all, in understanding Korean contemporary history, it is necessary to break away from the Cold War perspective and form a view point that can promote international cooperation to resolve the Korean Peninsula issue. It can be said that A Concise History of Korea deleted the political purpose of the US on the division, war, economic development and democratization. But this article pointed out that description should be critically reviewed to understand the role of the US for the current issue on the Korean Peninsula.
The other is not to set modernization and the formation of a modern nation as the final goal and direction. This article suggest that this perspective has limitations in critically examining what problems were missed in Korea's economic development and democratization process. Above all, it is necessary to recognize unification as a contradiction in the process of modernization, not as a condition for the completion of a modern state. Also it is important to present a peace regime as a way to overcome the contradiction of the modernization by reflecting the expansion of recognition on sovereignty and the current situation. In addition, it is more productive to understand current issues as those inherent in the process of modernization, not derived from the traditional Korean perspective of Confucianism.
