This study analyses the regional FDI pattern and trade characteristics of foreigninvestment companies in Shandong Province, China. The greater part of research data andmaterials were extracted from the Shandong Statistical Information NET. For this analysis,17 cities in Shandong province were grouped into four regional clusters according to theirlocational properties. Results indicate that cumulative FDI in Shandong has largely beenconcentrated on the eastern region(port cities) and on the logistics corridor between Jinancity(state capital) and the eastern region, therefore, reflecting the FDI’s preference for themodal accessibility of its trade supply chain. However, the regional FDI pattern showstemporal differentiation based on foreign companies' business strategies. FDI is very closelyconnected with trade characteristics of foreign investment companies and its effects arevariable depending on locational factors and the local industry’s maturity in the targetregion. The foreign investment companies’ level of contribution in trade reached its peak inthe early 2000’s and it has gradually decreased during the last decade. Amidst the developmentof domestic industries in China, foreign investment companies appear to be encounteringdifficulty in terms of catching up the trade growth. These approaches are very useful toanalyse the spatial pattern of FDI and the trade characteristics of foreign investmentcompanies. If further studies are done relative to FDI and trade, this study could enhanceunderstanding of the logistics flows of the regional supply chain.
