섬진강 상류 구석기유적의 분포와 특징 (The Distribution and Characteristics of Paleolithic Sites Upper Area of Seomjin River)

초록

섬진강 상류는 발원지인 진안군 백운면에서부터 오수천이 합류하는 순창군 적성면까지의 공간적 범위를 차지한다. 구석기시대는 2000년대 이후 본격적인 유적조사가 진행되면서 78개의 유적이 확인되었다. 상류의 구석기유적은 산악지대를 곡류하는 좁은 유역을 가진 지형적인 특징으로 입지와 관련된 여러 속성 중에서 배후 하천에서 평균 0.27㎞의 짧은 이격거리를 보여주면서, 지류가 아닌 본류에서도 27%의 유적이 분포한다. 또한 섬진강 유역이 전체적으로 선캄브리아기의 소백산계와 지리산계의 변성암이 기반암으로 분포하지만, 상류를 중심으로는 중생대 쥐라기와 백악기의 산성화산암과 퇴적암이 분포하면서 ‘유문암계’로 통칭할 수 있는 치밀한 입자구조를 가진 석재를 섬진강 중･하류와 비교하여 손쉽게 구득할 수 있는 조건을 가진다. 그 결과 동일한 석기제작기술을 갖춘 유적의 석재사용에서 중･하류와는 뚜렷하게 구분되는 석재사용이 관찰된다. 유적의 분포, 석기제작기술과 연결되는 석재사용에서 중･하류와 뚜렷하게 구분되는 특징을 보이는 섬진강 상류에서는 명갈색, 암갈색, 적갈색으로 연결되는 토양단면이 관찰되며 대부분의 석기는 명갈색층에서 돌날･좀돌날 제작기술과 함께 확인된다. 지층의 토양단면과 절대연대, 석기제작기술의 특징에서 이 시기는 섬진강 구석기문화의 전성기로 볼 수 있는 섬진강 Ⅳ･Ⅴ기에 해당하며, 섬진강 중･하류에서 돌날･좀돌날 석기제작기술을 소유한 집단이 기술의 효율적인 적용을 위해 ‘유문암계’라는 석재를 선택하고, 해당 석재의 구득활동을 위해 상류로 진출하는 과정에서 돌날･좀돌날을 갖춘 구석기 집단이 20,000 BP를 전후하는 시점에 섬진강 상류로 확산되는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 이후 섬진강 상류지역은 후기구석기시대 말기를 거쳐 신석기적인 요소가 등장하는 종말기까지 지역적 다양성을 보이면서 유적을 형성한다.

78 Paleolithic sites were identified in the upper area of Seomjin River, where a full-scale excavation survey has been conducted since the 2000s. The sites located the upper area have a short separation distance of 0.27㎞ on average from the river due to the geographical characteristics formed by winding through the rugged mountainous areas. In addition, 27% of the sites are distributed in the main stream, not in tributaries.In the geological structure, the Seomjin River basin is distributed with metamorphic rocks consisting of Sobaek mountain and Jiri mountain gneiss layers of the Precambrian era. However, the upper area consists of acid volcanic and sedimentary rocks from the Mesozoic Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. Therefore, it is easy to obtain raw material with a dense particle structure that can be collectively referred to as the 'Rhyolite' compared to the middle and lower areas. As a result, raw material use is observed that is clearly distinguished from the middle and lower areas in the lithic technology of sites equipped with the same lithic technology. In the upper area of Seomjin River, which shows characteristics compared to middle and lower areas in the distribution of sites and the use of raw material, a soil profile that connects bright brown, dark brown, and reddish brown is observed. Most stone tools are identified with blade and micro-blade lithic technology in the light brown layer.In terms of the characteristics of soil profile, absolute dating, and lithic technology, this period corresponds to the Seomjin River Phases IV and V, which can be seen as the prime of the Paleolithic culture of Seomjin River. During this period, a group that owns blade･micro-blade lithic technology in the middle and lower areas of Seomjin River chose raw material called 'Rhyolite' for efficient application of the technology. In addition, it can be seen that the Paleolithic groups with blade･micro-blade lithic technology spread to the upper area of Seomjin River around 20,000 BP as they advance into the upper area to acquire the raw material. After that, the upper area of Seomjin River forms a site with regional diversity from the end of the Upper Paleolithic to the time when neolithic elements emerge.
