초록

本稿에서는 敎科書에 실렸던 두 작품을 통해 時調 敎育에서 詩語의 意味를 정확히 把握하는 작업이 必要하다는 것을 살펴보았다. 論議를 통해 「東窓이 갓냐」의 ‘쇼 칠’은 ‘쇠죽을 쑬/쒀야 할’로 이해해야 하며, 「白雪이 자진 골에」의 ‘白雪’은 ‘奸臣’으로, ‘자진’은 ‘거세어진’으로 이해해야 함을 확인했다. 時調 敎育에서 詩語의 意味 把握을 정확히 해야 하는 理由는 두 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째는 정확하지 않은 詩語의 意味가 敎育을 통해 社會的으로 公認되어 再生産된다는 점이다. 둘째는 學習者들에게 合理的 說明이 없이 詩語에 대한 理解를 强要한다는 점이다. 時調를 포함한 古典文學 敎育을 위해서는 作品의 正確한 理解가 先行되어야 한다. 그래야 作品을 통해 전달하려는 作家의 意圖를 제대로 파악할 수 있다. 이를 위해 作品을 正確히 把握하려는 作業과 努力은 强調되어야 한다.

영어초록

Sijo is a Korean classical poetry genre and the works were written in old Hangeul. In that respect, it is important to exactly grasp the meaning of a poetic word for understanding Sijo. This paper examines the importance of understanding the exact meaning of a poetic word in two Sijo works(「Dongchangi Balgatnanya[東窓이 갓냐]」, 「Baekseoli Jajajin gole[白雪이 진 골에]」).
A poetic word, 'So Chil[소 칠]', in 「Dongchangi Balgatnanya」 has been understood as 'cattle-raising'. However, a review of an example in another work reveals that the exact meaning is 'having to make a gruel of beans and straw for cattle'. A poetic word, 'Baekseol[백설, white snow]', in 「Baekseoli Jajajin gole」 has been understood as 'a surviving retainer of Goryeo' or 'a loyal retainer'. However, the meaning conflicts with a poetic word, 'Maehwa[매화, apricot]' in the work, in the seasonal aspect. Therefore, the exact meaning is not 'a loyal retainer' but 'a treacherous subject'. Furthermore, 'Jajajin' in the work has been understood as 'melting away'. However, a review of an example in another work reveals that the exact meaning is 'blowing up'.
Those two works have been in textbooks. However, instructors have let learners know the erroneous meanings of the poetic words until now. The learners had to memorize the meanings of the poetic words without any rational explanation. That situation occurred because there was not an in-depth discussion about poetic words and the meaning of a poetic word confirmed without any discussion was accepted by our society. Furthermore, reference manuals for Sijo have been explaining poetic words erroneously. On this account, it is important to understand the meaning of a poetic word. When a poetic word without understanding the exact meaning becomes an object of education, learners have no choice but to understand the Sijo work with misunderstanding the meaning of the poetic word. Furthermore, it is because, when erroneous contents become an object of education, consequently they will get official recognition.
Sijo education is conducted in order to enable the learners to understand and enjoy Sijo. If so, for proper Sijo education, the education has to be conducted with understanding the exact meaning of a poetic word written in old Hangeul. That is up to professionals to do. In order to conduct Sijo education properly, it is necessary to make efforts to understand the meaning of a poetic word in Sijo.
