부산 연산동 고분군 출토 갑주(甲冑)의 성격과 의미 (The Characteristics and Archaeological Significance of the Armor Excavated from the Yeonsan-dong Tombs)

초록

연산동 고분군은 부산지역의 유일한 고총이다. 부산지역은 신라와 가야의 경계에 위치하며 고대사의 쟁점으로 논의되어 온 곳이다. 현재까지 이 지역은 어느 시기부터 신라의 지배를 받게 되었는지 지배 관계라면 어떤 형태로 보아야 하는지에 대한 의견이 분분하다. 그러므로 이 유적은 신라와 가야의 관계를 이해하는데 매우 중요한 위치에 있다. 그러나 90년대 조사 이후로 연산동 고분군과 관련한 별다른 성과가 없었으며 조사되었던 유적의 공식 보고서도 발간이 되지 못한 상태였다.
그러던 중 최근 발굴조사로 연산동 고분군 연구는 새로운 전기를 마련하였다. 부산박물관 문화재조사팀은 2009년부터 부산시 연제구청의 연산동 고분군 복원정비를 목적으로 3차례에 걸쳐 이 유적을 조사하였다. 조사 완료 후 발굴보고서가 발간되고 3차례 학술회의도 열려 유적에 대한 열띤 논의도 이루어졌다. 이를 계기로 경성대박물관이 과거 조사한 연산동 8호분도 발굴에 대한 종합적인 보고서가 발간될 수 있었다. 조사 성과는 봉분 축조기법을 포함하여 주목할 점들이 많았다. 특히 출토품 중 갑주는 말갑옷을 포함한 다양한 종류가 출토되었다. 이중에 왜계갑옷인 대금식 판갑이 주목된다. 이 갑옷은 신라와 가야 관련 유적 내에서 현재까지 가장 많은 수량이 이 유적에서 출토되었다.
본고는 이러한 연산동 고분군에서 출토된 갑주를 종합적으로 살펴보고 그 특징과 의의를 검토해보고자 하였다. 무엇보다 연산동 고총마다 왜계갑옷인 대금식 판갑이 출토되는 양상은 신라와 가야 여러 고분군에서도 드물기 때문에 이것들의 출현 배경과 관련한 의미를 살펴보고자 하였다.
일부 일본 연구자들은 갑옷 자료를 근거로 연산동 고분군 축조집단이 왜왕권과 직접 교섭했을 것으로 보았다. 그러나 당시 복천동 고분군을 포함한 부산지역은 신라와 관련된 물품이 부장되었고 갑주를 제외한 왜계물품을 찾기 어렵다. 교섭은 상호작용이 필요하기에 위의 자료만으로 연산동 고분군 축조집단이 단독으로 왜와 접촉하였다고 보기 어렵다. 신라와 가야에 왜계갑주가 분포된 양상을 검토하면 연산동 고분군 축조집단은 신라와 왜의 교섭에 교두보 역할을 하였다고 추정된다.

영어초록

The Yeonsan-dong Tombs are the only prehistoric tomb complex to have been discovered in Busan to date. The area of present-day Busan, which once formed the border between the kingdoms of Silla and Gaya, is the subject of a controversy about the ancient history of the southern region of the Korean Peninsula. Opinions still vary as to when the area was brought under the influence of Silla and, more specifically, what kind of dominant-subordinate relationship was maintained between the two. That explains why this archaeological site is deemed to be crucially important to understanding the relationship between Silla and Gaya. Unfortunately, few archaeological achievements have been associated with the site since the survey and excavations conducted in the 1990s and, to make matters worse, no formal report on the site has ever been published.
The situation changed recently with a new project to excavate the site, which led to a surge of interest in studying the tombs. The heritage investigation team of the Busan Museum investigated the site three times following the launch of the project to restore the ancient tombs of Yeonsan-dong in 2009. That investigation was followed by the publication of the investigation report and three academic conferences at which historians engaged in heated debates. The renewed interest in the Yeonsan-dong Tombs resulted in the publication of a comprehensive report on Yeonsandong Tomb No. 8, which had been investigated earlier on by a team from the Gyeongsang National University Museum. The excavation of the tomb resulted in the discovery of features that revealed the construction techniques of mound tombs, along with an array of artifacts including suits of armor worn by warriors and their war horses. Archaeologists are particularly interested in the Japanese-style armor unearthed at the site, as it has yielded more of this type of armor than most other Silla and Gaya sites excavated so far.
This study aims to achieve a comprehensive understanding of the ancient armor unearthed at the Yeonsan-dong Tombs in Busan based on the characteristics and historical significance of the relics. Here, the main discussion is focused on the background and historical significance of the Japanese-style armor discovered at almost all of the tombs at this site, unlike other Silla and Gaya cemeteries.
Some Japanese researchers, using the discovery of the Japanese-style armor as the basis of their hypothesis, have asserted that the community that built the Yeonsan-dong Tombs was directly related with the Japanese kingdom of the period. This view is, however, easily refutable because all of the other major archaeological sites in Busan dating back to the period, including the Bokchon-dong Tombs, have yielded artifacts connected with Silla. Indeed, few of these sites were found to contain any artifacts of Japanese origin other than armor. Given that cultural exchange between any two regions often involves the participation of all the neighboring regions, it is not easy to conclude that the community that built the Yeonsan-dong Tombs traded with the ancient Japanese kingdom of Wae directly without any connection with its close neighbors. Considering the distribution of the Japanese-style armor in Sill and Gaya, it is highly probable that the builders of the Yeonsan-dong Tombs played a comparatively important role in trade between Silla and Wae.
