사업보고서 기재정정과 감사품질이 감사보고시차에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Annual Report Correction and Audit Quality on Audit Report Lags)

초록

많은 선행연구는 감사보고시차가 길어질수록 재무제표에 대한 감사의견 조율이 지연되는 것이라고 주장하였다. 감사보고의 지연은 대리인 문제의 심화를 나타내므로 선행연구는 대리인 문제를 완화하기 위해 감사보고 지연의 다양한 결정 요인들을 탐구해 왔다. 그러나 공시품질의 저하를 나타내는 사업보고서 기재정정이 감사보고 지연의 원인일 수 있다는 점은 간과하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 사업보고서 기재정정이 감사보고 지연에 미치는 영향을 검증한 다음, 이러한 관련성이 감사품질에 의해 어떻게 달라지는지를 분석하는 것이다. 본 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 사업보고서 기재정정과 감사보고시차 간에는 유의한 양(+)의 관련성이 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 감사인이 사업보고서의 기재정정을 공시품질의 저하로 보고 재무제표 감사에 신중하게 접근하므로 감사보고가 지연된 것으로 보인다. 둘째, Big 4 감사인(BIG4), 감사보수(AF) 그리고 감사시간(AH)은 감사보고시차와 유의한 양(+)의 관련성이 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 감사품질이 높은 감사인이 감사의견 형성에 있어서 더 높은 확신 수준에 도달하려고 하므로 감사보고가 지연되는 것으로 보인다. 셋째, 사업보고서 기재정정과 감사보수 간에 상호작용변수는 감사보고시차와 유의한 양(+)의 관련성이 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 사업보고서 기재정정에 따른 감사보고 지연이 감사보수를 많이 지급한 기업에서 강화되는 것을 나타낸다. 넷째, 감사품질과 감사보고시차 간에 양(+)의 관련성은 사업보고서 기재정정이 발생한 기업에서 강화되었다. 이러한 결과는 사업보고서 기재정정이 발생한 기업에서 감사품질이 높을수록 감사보고 지연이 더 커지는 것을 알 수 있다. 본 연구는 사업보고서 기재정정이 공시품질을 저하시켜 대리인 문제를 심화시키므로 이를 통제할 수 있는 지배구조의 구축이 중요함을 보여주었다.

영어초록

Many previous studies argued that the longer the audit reporting lag, the more delayed the coordination of audit opinions on financial statements. Since delay in audit reporting indicates aggravation of the agency problem, various determinants of delay in audit reporting have been explored to alleviate the agency problem. However, it neglected that the correction of annual reports indicating the deterioration of the disclosure quality could be the cause of the delay in the audit report. The purpose of this study is to verify the effect of the correction of annual reports on the delay of the audit report, and then to analyze how this relationship is moderated by audit quality. The results are as follows. First, there is a significantly positive relationship between the correction of annual reports and audit report lag. This result indicates that the audit report was delayed because the auditor regards the correction of annual reports as a deterioration in the disclosure quality and strictly conducts the audit of the financial statements. Second, the Big 4 auditors (BIG4), audit fee (AF) and audit hours (AH) are positively associated with audit reporting lag. These results suggest that the audit report is delayed because the high-quality auditor tries to reach a higher level of assurance in forming an audit opinion. Third, the interaction variable between the correction of annual reports and audit fees is positively associated with audit report lag. These results indicate that the delay in audit report due to the correction of annual reports is strengthened in companies that paid a lot of audit fees. Fourth, the positive relationship between audit quality and audit report lag is strengthened in companies where the correction of annual reports occurred. These results show that the higher the audit quality, the greater the delay in the audit report in the company where the correction of annual reports occurred. This study suggests that it is important to establish a governance structure that reduces the correction of annual reports because it causes agency problems due to the deterioration of the disclosure quality.
