초록

본 연구는 기업집단 소속 계열사들로 구성된 감사시장에서 감사 수임 경쟁이 감사품질에 미치는 영향을 검증하였다. 연구표본은 총 8,921 기업-연도이며 2005~2014년 기간 중 외감기업으로서 소속 계열사가 5개 이상인기업집단 소속기업들이다. 경쟁정도의 측정은 허핀달-허쉬만 지수(Herfindahl-Hirschman Index)를, 회계 투명성은 Jones 모형(1991), 수정 Jones 모형(Dechow et al., 1995) 및 성과조정 Jones 모형(Kothari et al., 2005)의 세 가지재량적 발생액을 이용하였다. 실증 결과, 개별 기업집단 소속 계열사 감사시장의 경쟁구도가 비경쟁적일수록감사품질이 낮아지고 있으며, 이는 재벌 소속 기업집단에서 유의한 것을 확인하였다. 추가적으로 계속 감사기간이 이들 관계에 미치는 영향은 유의성이 크지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 기존의 감사시장 경쟁연구에서 충분히 다루어지지 않은 개별 기업집단 소속 계열사 시장에서의 감사인간 경쟁의 영향을 다루었다는 점에서 선행연구와 차별된다. 실증결과는 개별 기업집단의 계열사들에 대한 감사인의 독점적 감사수임이 감사인독립성 하락 및 감사품질 손실의 원인이 될 수 있음을 시사하고 있어 정책당국의 관심과 개선 유도가 필요한것을 시사한다.

영어초록

This paper examines the effects of auditors’ competitions on audit qualities in affiliated firms of korean conglomerate groups. In most Asian countries including South Korea, majority shareholders of a conglomerate group execute managerial influences on its subsidiary firms. We hypothesize that these influences might facilitate those contracts among affiliated firms and their auditors.
Samples are 8,921 firm-year which are external audited firms between 2005~2014 fiscal year, subsidiaries belong to conglomerate group. Competition levels among subsidiaries in each conglomerate group are measured by Herfindahl-Hirschman Index, and accounting qualities are measured by three discretionary accruals measures proposed by Jones model (1991), modified Jones model (Dechow et al. 1995) and performance adjusted Jones model (Kothari et al. 2005).
Empirical tests indicate that especially for korean chaebol group only, lower competition levels among subsidiaries in each conglomerate group result in lower accounting qualities, suggesting that the dominant auditor in a conglomerate group's auditing market tend to accept a kind of opinion shopping due to economic dependence on its subsidiary firms. Additionally, empirical tests indicate that chaebol conglomerate groups tend to accept opinion shopping more non-chaebol conglomerate groups. However we cannot find any additional significant effect of auditing tenure on the relationship between competition levels and accounting qualities.
This research is differentiated in that it tests effects of competition level among auditors in each conglomerate group, considering that prior studies on auditors' competition mainly have focused on industry specified auditing markets. The results also implicate that regulation authorities need to monitor the consequences of severe competition in conglomerate groups and to guide not to deteriorate accounting qualities. Furthermore, we expect that the result can be referenced by most Asian countries of similar governance structure of family-oriented conglomerate groups.
