여성 교육에 나타난 ‘비일상’ 체험과 주체성―한일 여자교과서 『부녀감』과 『여자독본』 비교를 중심으로― (‘Non-daily life’ Experiences and Subjectivity in Women’s Education─Focusing on the comparison between the textbooks of Korean-Japanese 『Hujyokagami』 and 『Reading Book for Women』─)

초록

본고는 근대전환기 일본과 한국의 열전형식 여자교과서, 『부녀감(婦女鑑)』(1887)과 『여자독본』(1908)에 나타난 ‘비일상 체험’에 대한 여성인물의 대처 양상을 비교분석하였다. ‘비일상 체험’의 형상화와 ‘일상’으로의 회복을 여성의 입장에서 파악하고, 각국이 상상했던 비일상성과 사건 해결방식을 검토했다. 또한 각 교과서를 학습한 여학교를 추적하고, 해당 텍스트에 영향 받았을 대표적 여성의 사회진출까지 살폈다. 이것은 근대기에 들어서 증가한 여성교육담론이 여성들의 적극적인 사회참여와 주체성 확립에 영향을 주었다는 평가에 대한 대답으로 기능한다.
『『부녀감』의 여성인물은 비일상적 상황에서 타자와 연대하며 공동체를 만들어 위기를 극복한다. 즉, 사적공동체와 위계구도를 넘어 신뢰관계를 통한 결속력을 강화시킨다. 이밖에 사건 해결을 위해 과감하게 지리적 경계를 넘나드는데, 이러한 모험담은 학습자로 하여금 새로운 세계에 대한 호기심을 불러일으키고, 주체적인 삶을 모색하는 데 도움을 준다. 한편, 『여자독본』의 여성인물은 일상으로의 회복을 위해 지배체제를 전복시키고자 한다. 직접 군사를 진두지휘하며 체제에 저항하는 등 적극적인 행보를 보이는데, 이들은 마치 혁명을 꿈꾸는 자들과 같다.
또한 두 교과서에 제시되는 비일상 표상은 각국의 실제 상황과 어울리며 등장인물의 대처양상은 한일 여성들의 사회진출과 연관성을 가진다. 이렇듯 격변기 한일 여성교육에서 비일상성은 주요 테마였고, 이는 각국의 사회상과 오버랩되는 것이었다. 공통적으로 두 교과서에는 용감하고 주체적인 여성상이 상당수 제시되는데, 이러한 표상체계는 실제 여성들의 사상계 형성에 영향을 주었다.

영어초록

This paper is a comparative analysis of how female characters deal with “non-daily life” that appeared in Japanese and Korean biographical women’s textbooks during the modern transition period, Hujyokagami(1887) and Reading Book for Women(1908). The figuration of “non-daily life” and their restoration to “Everydayness” were grasped from women’s perspectives, and the extraordinary nature imagined by each country and the ways in which the incidents were resolved were examined. This paper also traced the women’ schools that utilized each textbooks, and even examined the social advancement of representative women who were influenced by the texts. This serves as an answer to the assessment that women’s educational discourse, which increased in the modern era, influenced women’s active participation in society and the establishment of their own independence.
The female characters in the Hujyokagami overcome crises by building community in solidarity with others in “non-daily life”. In other words, they transcend private communities and hierarchical structures to strengthen cohesion through trust. They also boldly cross geographical boundaries to solve crimes, and these adventure stories arouse learners’ curiosity about new worlds and encourage them to explore independent living. Then, the female characters in Reading Book for Women take the lead in overthrowing the ruling regime in order to regain their normal lives. They show aggressive actions, such as directly commanding the army to resist the regime, and look like dreamers of revolution.
In addition, the representations of “non-daily life” in both textbooks match the actual situations in each country, revealing the connection between the coping styles of these figures and the social advancement of Japanese and Korean women. “Non-daily life” was a major theme in Japanese and Korean women’s education during a period of drastic change, and this overlapped with the social images of each country. Furthermore both textbooks commonly presented a brave and proactive image of women, and this system of representation influenced the actual formation of women’s thought.
