The Relationship Between Facial Emotion Identification Abilities and Social Skills for Children with Intellectual Disabilities: A Pilot Study

초록

This study examined the extent to which facial emotion identification abilities of children with Intellectual Disabilities(ID) correlated with their social skills as rated by their teachers and parents. This study also investigated relationships among the children’s emotion identification skill,social skills, and other variables including IQ, age, gender, and the level of inclusion. Participants were 16 children identified with ID between the ages of six to ten years, 16 teachers, and 14 parents.
Participants’ facial emotion identification abilities were measured by a computer version of the Diagnostic Analysis of Nonverbal Accuracy-Revised (DANVA-2, adult faces) and their social skills were measured by parents’ and teachers’ ratings of the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS) checklist.
The results indicated that participants’ emotion identification abilities were not significantly correlated with their social skills rated by their parents and special education teachers, and there was inconsistency between parents’ ratings and teachers’ ratings of the participants’ social skills and problem behaviors. Participants’ IQ scores were significantly correlated with their emotion identification abilities and their problem behaviors rated by parents were related to their age. This study had a small sample size, so generalization of the findings is limited. Thus, further study needs to be directed at replication of this study using a larger sample of children with ID.
