朝鮮後期 才子佳人小說 관련 논의의 비판적 검토와 전개 양상에 대한 試論 (A critical appraisal about jaeja-gain novel in the Late Period of Chosun Dynasty novel and an essay about Development Phase of jaeja-gain novel)

초록

본고는 朝鮮後期 소설사에서 才子佳人小說의 장르논란에 대한 최근 논의를 비판적으로 검토한 뒤 재자가인소설의 장르 성립 가능성에 대해 타진해 보고 이를 바탕으로 재자가인소설의 전개 양상을 살펴보려는 의도 아래 작성된 것이다. 재자가인소설과 관련된 최근 논의는 ‘才子佳人小說’을 장르로 인정할 수 있느냐의 여부가 핵심이라 할 수 있다. 장르로 인정받기 위해서는 淸代 재자가인소설의 조선 유입과 독서 기록을 통해 정황이 확인될 필요가 있으며, 창작된 작품의 실례를 통해 증명이 되어야 한다. 필자는 이와 관련하여 ‘통속적 전기소설’과 ‘재자가인소설’의 관련양상을 주목하고 그 중에서도 특히 ‘결말’구성 방식에 집중하였다. ‘결말’구성 방식은 ‘비극적 결말’과 ‘행복한 결말’로 구분할 수 있는데 <周生傳>ㆍ<雲英傳>ㆍ<憑虛子訪花錄>ㆍ<沈生傳> 등은 비극적 결말로 작품이 마무리 되며, <王慶龍傳>ㆍ<崔陟傳>ㆍ<洞仙記>ㆍ<相思洞記>ㆍ<白雲仙翫春結緣錄> 등은 행복한 결말로 마무리 되는 양상을 보인다. ‘결말’구성 방식에 따라 층위를 크게 두 부분으로 나눌 수 있는데 ‘결말’구성 방식은 중요한 분기점의 역할을 한다.
이때 ‘행복한 결말’로 구성된 작품의 경우 결말 구성 방식의 변화로 인해 서사전반에 걸쳐 ‘흥미성’이 강화되는 양상이 나타났는데, 그 대표적 특징이 바로 ‘一對多의 결연구도’이다. 이는 傳奇小說이 ‘通俗化’의 길로 전이되는 양상을 보여주는 지점으로 여기에 영향을 끼친 장르로 ‘才子佳人小說’을 주목할 필요가 있는 것이다.
재자가인소설은 <好逑傳>, <玉支磯>, <玉嬌梨>, <平山冷燕> 등이 조선에 유입된 후 조선후기 소설사에 영향을 끼쳤는데, 가장 대표적인 작품이 <紅白花傳>이다. 하지만 이보다 먼저 주목할 작품이 있는데 그것은 바로 <九雲夢>이다. <구운몽>의 경우 ‘재자가인소설’적 경향이 다분함에도 불구하고 이러한 요소에 대해서는 그간 간과된 측면이 있었다. 문제는 <구운몽>의 ‘재자가인소설’적 성향이 ‘통속적 전기소설’인 <백운선완춘결연록>에 영향을 주었고, 이후 ‘재자가인소설’로 분류되는 <五老峰記>에 이르기까지 영향을 끼친 점에서 <구운몽>의 ‘재자가인소설’적 성향은 환기될 필요가 있다. 따라서 ‘통속적 전기소설’과 ‘재자가인소설’이 상호 영향을 주고받은 관계를 통해 17세기 이후 한문소설사에서 ‘통속적 전기소설’과 ‘재자가인소설’의 존재 양상의 일단을 확인할 수 있으며 이를 통해 ‘재자가인소설’이 한문소설사에서 가지는 위상에 대해 재고할 필요가 생기게 되었다.
이를 바탕으로 조선후기 재자가인소설을 살펴보면 전형적인 구조에서 조선적으로 탈바꿈된 형태로 갱신의 과정 또한 거치고 있어 흥미로운데 그것을 가장 핵심적으로 보여주는 요소가 바로 ‘적강 모티프’이다. 이점은 <十二峰轉環記>→<五老峰記>→ <蓬萊新說>로 이어지는 재자가인소설의 계보를 통해 일정부분 확인할 수 있다.
본고는 17세기 애정전기류 소설 가운데 최근 재가가인소설로 논의되던 작품들의 장르 문제를 검토하면서 이들 작품이 재자가인소설로 분류되는 것에 비판적인 입장을 피력한 것이다. 기존 논의에 대한 대안으로 17세기 이후 애정전기소설이 분화되는 층위 가운데 ‘결말 구성 방식’에 주목하였고, 특히 ‘행복한 결말’로 구성된 ‘통속적 전기소설’이 ‘재자가인소설’과 상호 연관을 주고받는 과정에서 ‘재자가인소설’이 조선후기 소설사에서 일정 부분 지분을 차지하면서 등장하는 것으로 보았다. 본고에서는 이를 바탕으로 17세기 이후 한문소설사에서 재자가인소설의 존재와 그 사적 전개 양상까지 살펴보는 시론적 성격의 논의를 펼쳐보았다.

영어초록

Romantic jeon-gi has been the major genre of the Hanmoon novel until 17th centurie sand the several masterpieces like <Joo-Sang-Jeon>, <Wui-Sang-Jeon>, <Choi-Chuck-Jeon>, <Woon-Young-Jeon>, <Wang-Kyung-Ryong-Jeon> and <Sang-Sa-Dong-Ki> are well known. However, those novels once popular slowly had lost its light along the history and the reputation of romantic jeon-gi has been decreased since 18th centuries. Eventhough <Bing-Huh-Ja-Bang-Wha-Rock>, <Back-Woon-Seon-Whan-Chun-Gyoul-Youn-Rock>, <Jong-Sang-Jeon> and <Sim-Sang-jeon> novel of biography and novel of novel of yadam has taken the reputation over romantic jeon-gi. However, the point of view on understanding history of novel needs to be changed and the part that need careful attention is the variation process of romantic jeon-gi novel after 17th centuries. The distinguishable part of variation aspects is located at the ending story formation method. So called ‘Tragicending’ and ‘happy-ending’ are those depicted as including the distinguishable parts. First of all the tragic-ending type had been handed down from <Joo-Sang-Jeon> and <Woon-Young-Jeon> at 17th centuries to <Bing-Huh-Ja-Bang-Wha-Rock> and <Sim-Sang-Jeon> at 18th centuries and later on <Po-Yi-Gyeo-Jip> at 19th centuries. This flow shows that ‘tragicending’, the major genre of romantic jeon-gi, had been consistently applied to novels and it plays a role as a proof of the live of romantic jeon-gi. However, the more important method is the happy ending type where the strengthened interests are shown due to the variation of ending story method and one of the major symptoms is connecting structure of one to multiple characters. This point is when the jeon-gi novel shows formation of polarization and ‘Jae-Ja-Ga-In’ novel is influenced by polarization vice versa. Jae-Ja-Ga-In novel is regards as giving impacts on novel history of post-Cho-Sun right after <Ho-Goo-Jeon>, <Ock-Gee-Ki>, <Ock-Go-Ri> and <Pyeong-San-Nang-Youn> got into Cho-Sun and one of the popular novel is <Hong-Back-Wha-Jeon>. Prior to this, <Goo-Woon-Mong> the tendency of ‘Jae-Ja-Ga-In’ is dense. The issue is that <Back-Woon-Seon-Wan- Chun-Gyoul-Youn-Rock> which shows polarization of jeon-gi novel clearly has the influence of <Goo-Woon-Mong>. This is a case that shows the intimate relationship between ‘popular jeon-gi novel’ and ‘Jae-Ja-Ga-In novel’. Not only that but structure of novel history transferred from ‘popular jeon-gi novel’ to ‘Jae-Ja-Ga-In novel’ and ‘Jae-Ja-Ga-In novel’ clearly founded its own ground. At the same time ‘Jae-Ja-Ga-In novel’ shows an interesting transformation because it was going through a reform process from typical structure to ‘type of chosun’ and ‘motive of down from sky’, the representative factor, could be confirmed by the succession through <shipibongjeonhwangi> to <oh-ro-bong-gi> and later on to <bong-rae-shin-seol>. Through this the related aspects in ‘popular jeon-gi novel’ and ‘Jae-Ja-Ga-In novel’ which composed of ‘happy ending’ could be recognized, and it needs to pay attention to see that ‘desire’ played a role as a critical medium between them. If the main female character’s aggressive movements are understood as device that comes as an existence designed to achieve the main male character’s desire, eventually the fundamental character in the novel is male and the novel could be depicted as a creation of male desire. Thus, this thesis paper has focused on the variation of jeon-gi novel after 17th centuries and it has characteristics of emerging theory researching on the relationship between ‘happy-ending’ and ‘Jae-Ja-Ga-In novel’ in terms of the emergence of ‘Jae-Ja-Ga-In novel’ through the intimate process between ‘popular jeon-gi novel’ composed of especially ‘happy ending’ and ‘Jae-Ja-Ga-In novel’.
