초록

Given the significance of household tourists in domestic tourism market, research attention needs to be allocated to this segment in order to bring more economic benefits to a tourism destination. The purpose of this study was to examine the travel expenditure structure of domestic household tourists. In order to empirically examine the travel expenditure structure, data of the 2009 National Tourism Survey conducted by Korea Culture & Tourism Institute were used. Among various type of domestic trips, data of household trips(n=1,935 trips) defined as trips with at least one family member were explored. The results indicated that household tourists spend the highest portion of their travel expenditure on food and beverage(43%), followed by spending on transportation(32%). There exist significant differences in expenditure structure with the condition of day or overnight trips. Contribution of food and beverage and entertainment to the total expenditure are significantly higher for day trips, while that of transportation is higher for overnight trips. Significant variations in expenditure structure by trip purpose and type of accompanying group have been also observed. Practical implications of findings for destination promotion and advertisement are discussed.
