본문내용
There are controversies in the world.
Many agricultural scientists and food policy specialists view GM crops as an important element in sustainable food security and environmental management. But many people have been opposing to use GM foods because it has many problems.
Today the majority of foods in supermarkets contains genetically modified substances.
What are genetically-modified foods?
Genetically Modified (GM) foods are foods that have altered DNA through genetic engineering. These plants have been modified in the laboratory to enhance resistance into herbicides or improved nutritional contents.
The time that GM foods were put on the market at the first time is the early 1990s. The most commonly modified foods are derived from plants: soybean, corn, canola, cotton seed oil, sugar beet, and tomato.
This picture shows the detour of GMO.
In Korea, most genetically modified crops are consumed via cooking oil, soy sauce, and livestock feed.
Labeling of GM foods
Many countries have established labelling regulations and guidelines on coexistence.
Koreans have eaten GM foods like bean and corn without any management or sign since 1996. After putting a GMO mark on food from 2001, we started to concern about GM foods.
