Dokdo is an important island. Especially this island is important to Korea and Japan geographically, and both countries want to claim Dokdo as their territory. Dokdo’s economic value is enormous. Near Dokdo a cold current and warm current meet, so there are many resources. This is called Korean Galapagos Island due to that. Experts already confirmed that there is a large supply of natural gas, and they expect that there is a possibility that petroleum can be hidden underground. The country that has Dokdo can gain territorial waters that are outside the 12- mile limit of the island. Dokdo also can work as a datum point for EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone) of 200-miles. It means that if Korea gives up Dokdo, then Korea will lose 50.000 of territorial waters---an amount about the size of almost half at most or 1/10th at least the size of South Korea land can be lost. This area is also important for military service. It is important to the defense of each nation. These reasons are why Dokdo, a much disputed island of rocks administered by South Korea for decades but which Japan claims, is an important issue.
