건강을 위하여 맨 손을 사용하는 것은 고대로부터 기원하는 오래된 생활 방식이다. 농경사회가 시작되고 정착 생활을 하면서 삶의 질이 높아지고 질병에 대한 이해가 깊어져 상처 부위를 주무르거나 문지르고, 압박하는 등의 본능적인 행동으로 증상을 경감시키는 치료 효과를 경험하게 된다. 맨 손 치료는 각각의 증상이나 치료방법에 따라 결과가 달랐고, 질병의 원인이나 근육, 골절, 탈구 등의 뼈와 관절 병변에 따라 치료 방법을 선택하게 된다.(Moon 등, 2020)
도수 치료의 올바른 정의는 시술자의 손을 사용하여 치료를 목적으로 환자의 신체에 힘을 가하여 치료하는 방법을 통틀어 의미하고, 도수 의학이란 이러한 치료 방법을 연구하는 학문이다. 이는 생체 역학을 포함한 충분한 의학지식과 맨 손 중재기법을 자세히 습득한 숙련된 시술자에 의해서 일정한 속도, 크기, 방향, 각도를 가진 힘이 환자에게 가해지는 과정이 섬세히 시행될 때 효과가 있는 가장 적극적인 보존적 치료 방법 중 하나이다. 맨 손 치료의 영역은 단순한 마사지부터 관절의 움직임 등을 포함하는 다양한 기술이 포함된다. 문헌에는 사지의 관절 기능 장애, 척추 질환, 턱관절 장애(temporomandibular disorders), 두통, 신경 증후군 등을 중재하는데 맨 손 치료가 사용되었다. 관절 움직임의 질적 향상과 양적 범위를 증가시키기 위해 관절 안정성을 향상시키고, 통증을 줄이며 신경전도와 유연성을 증진시켜 움직임 기능의 향상을 목적으로 시행되었다.(Moon 등, 2020)
고대 유적을 살펴보면 지구상의 여러 지역에서 맨 손 치료가 시행되었던 흔적을 볼 수 있고, 각각의 고유한 역사와 특성을 가지고 있지만 그들이 서로 교류하고 소통한 흔적은 많지 않다.(Anderson, 1984, 1987) 동양수기요법 중 대표적인 것으로 안마(按摩)와 추나(推拿)가 있고, 그 근원은 진한(秦漢)시대(B.C300~A.D200)의 한의학 고서 황제내경(黃帝內經)에서 찾아 볼 수 있다.
