 Purpose
- Check the characteristics of cation dissolved in a solution through a qualitative analysis.

 Theory
- Qualitative analysis
정량분석과 대비되는 개념이다. 시료에 들어있는 화학종, 즉 분석물(analyte)이 무엇인지와 같은 비수치적인 정보를 결정하는 것으로 분석물의 농도 혹은 양을 결정하는 것은 아니다. 예로는 반응이 용액에서 거품을 일으키며 가스를 생성하는 것을 관찰하거나 반응이 색상 변화를 초래하는 것을 관찰하는 것을 들 수 있다. 정성적 분석은 정량적 분석만큼 신뢰할 수는 없지만 종종 훨씬 더 쉽고 빠르고 저렴하게 수행할 수 있다.

- Quantitative analysis
시료에 존재하는 특정 화학종, 혹은 여러 가지 화학종들의 절대적인 양 혹은 상대적인 양을 결정하는 것을 말한다. 시료 속에 존재하는 성분들이 무엇인지 특정을 하게 되면 각 성분들의 절대적인 양 혹은 상대적인 양을 결정하는 정량 분석을 수행하게 된다. 시료에 존재하는 각 성분의 절대적인 양과 상대적인 양은 시료의 특정한 성질을 결정하는 데 중요한 역할을 한다. 정량 분석을 하기 위한 고전적인 방법으로는 무게 분석법 또는 적정법에 기초한 부피 분석법이 있다. 오늘날 분석 화학에서 정량 분석은 복잡하고 정교한 분석기기를 활용하여 이루어진다. 정량 분석에 주로 활용되는 기기분석법에는 분광 분석법, 전기 분석법, 분리분석법이 있다.
