본문내용
Figural Representation of the Unity of the Three Religions:
The coexistence of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Daoism can be located foremost from the developments of protagonists in the Journey to the West: Tripitaka, Sun Wukong, Pigsy, and Sandy. Individual character alludes to different belief in whether Buddhism, Confucianism, or Daoism. Correctly speaking, each of them represents the pursuit of, rather than to represent the belief itself. For example, Tripitaka is a Buddhist monk who is leaving to the West in pursuit of Buddha’s teaching. At the beginning, he is an uncompleted Buddhist and therefore, undergoes eighty-one different ordeals prepared by Buddha on his Journey to the West only to achieve
truthful enlightenment. After all the ordeals, Tripitaka is finally completed and suitable to attain Nirvana. For him, the Journey from the East to the West is not just a physical movement nor a religious practice, but also a spiritual journey “from death to long life” (Haar 120).
