The Vietnam War is the first war that United States ever lost. It was the war that United States started with unjust cause, manipulating Gulf of Tonkin incident, and finished by retreating under Nixon Doctrine. As the nation was divided by this controversial war, people memorialize this war in different ways. Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial memorialized Vietnam War as a national tragedy that traumatized the whole nation and needs recovery. VVM is often called ‘therapeutic memorial’(Savage, 2009). A person would not need something that is therapeutic unless one is wounded or damaged. Likewise the fact that VVM is often described as ‘therapeutic memorial’ reflects the idea that some people memorialize Vietnam War as a tragedy that needs recovery.
