Food production has been affected by increasing population. The rapid growth of the world population impacts the total amount and distribution of food. According to the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the global population is expected to increase by around 2.3 billion people between now and 2050. At the same time, the amount of food that will need to be processed will rise by almost 70 percent – and 100 percent in the developing world – which will mean the increased supply of several products to help cope with the demand. However, according to David Pimentel and Henry Kendall (1994), only a third of the Earth’s soil is suitable for agriculture. A 30% of this arable soil is expected to experience erosion by 2050 due to unsustainable agricultural practices.
