Just when adulthood begins is difficult to say.
In a legal sense, adult status is often granted by governments - at age 18 for some activities or at age 21 for others.
Psychologically speaking, adulthood is marked by two possibilities that at first seem contradictory: (1)independence, in the sense of taking responsibility for one's actions and no longer being tied to parents and (2) interdependence, in the sense of building new commitments and intimacies in interpersonal relationships.
