In Katherine Mansfield’s “Miss Brill,” Miss Brill is described as a lonely old woman. It seems that she wants to be “connected” (Wilson 214) to the community given that she keeps overhearing the others and imagines the whole park as a play in which she performs with other people. However, she just shows negative reaction to the others like old couple. And when she sees an old lady who wears an ermine toque, Miss Brill just looks down her and laughs at her appearance. In this passage, her attitudes toward the people just contradict her eager to be a part of the community, and that also could be seen as an irony of Miss Brill. And while overhearing the others, she just finds a young couple and she expects to hear some romantic saying from them. But far from her expectation they are just a couple who are very rude and arrogant. So in Katherine Mansfield’s “Miss Brill,” even though Miss Brill hopes for harmony with the community, her thought of the old couple and the young couple does show the gap between the reality and imagination that she makes.
