본문내용
Chang-rae Lee’s A Gesture Life is a story about an old asian man living in a quiet suburban area in New York after the retirement. Franklin Hata is a successful Japanese American man who has made a great fortune from running a medical supply shop for years with kindness and service. He is almost depicted as a model minority. The novel begins with Hata’s current life as a retired old man. Hata is in his 70s living in a suburban area where middle class white people live called Bedley Run in New York. Hata often runs into a moment which recalls him memories of his early 20s of participating in Pacific war as a medical officer and a comfort woman he has met in the war. It is shown throughout the novel that Hata does not want to recall this flashback of memories. It is interesting that Hata is not fully Japanese; he is actually Korean who acts like Japanese.
