Brief Analysis on News Text
In this essay, I will analyze a news article “Controversy grows over private clinic” in terms of experiential meaning using English Grammar: University Course. Each paragraph of the article is an independent clause which composes of structures or functions such as agent, recipient, affected, process, attribute, and circumstance (5).
The title of this news article--“Controversy grows over private clinic”--is composed of an agent, material process, circumstance and an affected accordingly. The agent is an entity that is “capable of initiating and controlling the action” whereas the affected is “affected by the action denoted by the verb in an active clause” (129, 130). The agent is expected to be a human being since a thing does not have a volition to initiate or control an action; however, it can be human agency free by nominalization. Nominalization brings two results: “loss of human agency” and “an increase in lexical density” (162). It is important because it brings the clause to “a higher level of abstraction” (162).
