In Sir Ywain and Sir Gawain, a courteous knight who once represented the pinnacle status position in civilization, temporarily beomes a wild man. In this piece of literature, the knight reassures value and concept of the court, and suggests courtly romances as the standard theme for romantic literature. But at the same time, it questions the norm of courtly romance. It argues the theme of romantic literature is not shown through the superiority of court or the knight but only when the knight physically experiences the wilderness. Therefore, the knight's identity is not enchased by the court only. Sir Ywain and Sir Gawain promotes the idea that when the knight experiences both the courtliness and wilderness physically, the knight is able to confirm his identity.
