메타분석을 분명히 정의하라면 어떤 특정한 연구 주제에 대해 행해진 여러 독립적인 연구결과들을 종합하는 방법이다. 다라서 여러 연구결과물을 '분석'하는 것이 메타분석이며, 연구물에 대한 매우 적극적인 논의라고 할 수 있다. 여러 가지 제약조건 ( 즉 작은 표본수, 한정된 대상자. 연구조건의 여러 가지 한계 등)에 의해 영향을 받는 하나의 연구결과물은 매우 미약하다고 볼 수 있지만, 같은 목적을 갖고 시행한 여러 연구들의 종합적인 결과는 결코 미약하다고 볼 수 없는 것이다.
수많은 연구가 축적된 현 시점에서, 특히 여러 연구결과들이 서로 일치하지 않는 결론을 제시하는 경우에 메타분석의 필요성은 더욱 두드러진다. Alywood 등 (1989) 이 찾은 저체중아의 발달결과에 대한 논문은 무려 80편이 되며, 입원환자를 대상으로 스트레스와 불안의 간호중재를 실시하여 그 효과를 제시하고 있는, 지난 20년 사이 국내에서 발표된 논문수는 70여편을 초과하고 있다 (이 등, 미발간).
