I. Introduction
In recent years, the study of loanword phonology has received a great deal of attention as phonologists have discovered its application as a window into speakers` grammatical competence. Loanwords can provide evidence for unconscious phonological knowledge that is otherwise not manifested within the confines of a single language`s phonology. That is, when borrowing words from English into Korean, Koreans are often faced with the choice of whether to preserve the exact phrasing of the source or to sacrifice the phrasing to repair phonetic violation.
The main goal of this research is to examine the observed pattern of the vowel epenthesis in English-to-Korean loanwords and the conditioning of vowel epenthesis in English-to-Korean loanwords. Two theories explain the change of English loanwords in Korean: One applies to consonant clusters in syllable margins and the other applies after simple coda consonants.

not by means of epenthesis at the expense of the violation of DEP constraint. This is just the opposite pattern shown by loanword adaptation. Thus, it is obvious that Korean native word phonology is unable to deal with vowel epenthesis in loanword adaptation process. This discrepancy between native phonology and loanword adaptation process is one of the most important points to be addressed by any proposal about vowel epenthesis in Korean loanword adaptation processes. This very point is particularly problematic to standard phonological approach to loanword adaptation, as the reader will examine shortly. I am going to argue that this discrepancy is rooted in the pursuit of perceptual similarity between the source form and the adapted output.
