Sick Women, Sick Society:
The Protagonists in “The Story of an Hour”
and “The Yellow Wallpaper”
In Thus Spoke Zarathustra Nietzsche writes, “The happiness of man is: I will. The happiness of woman is: he wills. ‘Behold, just now the world became perfect!’”. This passage shows well the attitude toward women in the C19th. In the C19th it was not permitted for women to freely express their words and enjoy own life. For insistence, middle class women who lived in this time were compelled to obey men, just staying at home and taking care of a house. Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” and Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper” both deal with a life of middle class women who lived in late C19th America. These short stories show the status of the women who belonged to a society where patriarchy had generally been accepted. The authors wanted to criticize patriarchal society that had forced the women to do passive role through weak women in these short stories.
