Introduction
Language is the symbol of tool for human to express his or her own opinion and is the key for communication. Language reflects the social system, belief, and attitude of a certain society. They, therefore, affect how to communicate and how to think. Each nation and each race has their own languages and the ways to communicate. Their ways to communicate show some difference, when they have a conversation, argument or discussion. Newspaper is the most representative example to show the rhetorical difference. The lack of understanding the difference between Korean and American rhetorical style causes some misunderstanding, which brings discomfort to readers. To improve the reader’s understanding of the rhetorical devices used in the newspaper articles, it is important that he/she is provided with basic background information about the particular newspapers of those two countries. For the purposes of this analysis, articles were chosen that had a political or environmental context, which provided the analysis group with rhetorical devices that were easy to identify, critique and compare.
