프탈레이트에 관한 이론적 고찰

소개

여러 가지 환경오염 물질에 의한 생태계 파괴에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있는 가운데 최근 몇 년간에 미국을 비롯한 선진국에서 관심을 가지고 규제하고 있는 물질이 내분비계장애물질이다. 내분비계장애물질이 인간에 대한 영향 및 영향을 나타낼 수 있는 양에 대해서는 정확히 밝혀져 있지 않지만, 이에 대한 관심은 상당히 높은데 그 이유는 내분비계는 우리 몸을 조절하는 가장 중추적인 역할을 하기 때문이다. 인간에 의해 합성되거나 혹은 자연계에 존재하는 내분비계장애물질은 생명체의 정상적인 호르몬 기능에 영향을 주는 화학물질로 환경 중 배출된 화학물질이 체내에 유입되어 성장, 생식 등에 관여하여 정상적인 작용을 방해하는 호르몬처럼 작용한다고 하여 환경호르몬이라 한다.1 내분비계장애물질로 알려진 물질의 대부분은 산업용 화학물질이 차지하고 있으며, 생태계 및 인간의 호르몬계에 영향을 미쳐 전세계적으로 생물종에 위협이 될 수 있다는 경각심을 일으켜 오존층 파괴, 지구온난화 문제와 함께 세계 3대 환경문제로 등장하였다.

I. 서 론

우리나라의 경우 내분비계 장애물질이 1998년에 환경호르몬이라는 용어로 소개되면서 사회적인 이슈가 된 이후로 환경호르몬, 내분비교란물질, 내분비계장애물질, 내분비계 교란화학물질 등으로 다양하게 불렸다. 그러다 1998년 5월 ‘내분비계 장애물질 대책협의회’에서 공식적인 명칭통일의 필요성을 인식하고, 균형을 잃게 하는 교란의 의미 보다 해당 물질에 체내에서 장애를 일으킬 수 있다는 측면에서 ‘내분비계 장애물질’을 사용하기로 결정하였다.2 이에 따라 현재 정부차원에서 공식적으로 내분비계 장애물질(Endocrine Disruptor Compounds, EDCs)로 용어를 통일하여 사용하고 있다. EDCs의 목록은 전세계적으로 확정된 것은 없으나, 한국은 대부분의 국가에서 참고하고 있는 세계야생보호기금(World Wildlife Found Canada, WWF)의 67종의 화학물질을 우선 연구대상으로 하고 있다. 이들 물질 67종에는 DDT등 유기염소계 농약, PCB등 잔류성 유기할로겐 화합물, 프탈레이트류 및 알킬페놀, 비스페놀 A 등 산업용화학물질, 다이옥신등의 부산물들이 포함되어 있다. 이들 67종의 물질 중에 프탈레이트류는 취급제한으로 규제되고 있는 물질 중에 DEHP, BBP가 포함되며, 미규제 물질이지만 자료수집 및 규제 검토 중에 있는 물질로 DEP, DBP가 포함되어 있다.3
