In this essay, one will discuss how the film adaptation alters the original story. This will be done by looking at the film in three respects: ‘characteristics of elements used to produce the film’, ‘director’s awareness, background information, and intention’, and ‘viewers’ understanding’. For better explanation, two virsions of films Zeffirellii’s and Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet and Francis Ford Coppola’s film Dracula will be examined partially.

Second, no matter how much the element the director use, it is director who has control over the major direction of the film. Thus, his/her awareness, intelligence, and intention will be the principle factor in deciding the direction in ‘adapting’ process.

There were, and still are as we can see from Darren Kerr’s essay, lots of literature critiques who see film adaptation as an inferior work than the novel. In the book Literature and Film, edited by Rober Stam and Alessandra Raengo, even lists eight reasons explaining why some critiques think in such a way about the film adaptation.
