This time is the age of global capitalism. Due to the fierce competition between multinational entities, world capital has moved continuously in a series of waves into the countries of cheap labour cost. Most recently, the destination of capital is expected to be ‘Chindia’: that refers to China and India together as upcoming economic power. However beside that mainstream there is another story. As prices will no doubt increase and political stability cannot be guaranteed in chindia, manufacturers and traders are increasingly reluctant to put all their eggs in one basket. They are looking for Asian alternatives to chindia to source, make, and deliver critical supply chain components. (Thuermer 2006) Amongst many viable alternatives such as Malaysia, Pakistan, Thailand or Vietnam, Sri Lanka is rising as a niche market with its specialized incentives to investors.
On that account, this essay will be dealing with the advantages and disadvantages of UK companies engaging in Sri Lanka market by way of direct investment. Moreover, with the example of joint venture of UK companies with Sri Lanka company MAS holdings, this essay will especially focus on the textiles and garments industry which is the country`s number one export earner, accounting for 53% of total export earnings and 5.3% of GDP.
