1. 인터넷 중독에 대한 세 가지 접근

과도한 인터넷 사용을 일컫는 '인터넷 중독'은 이제는 학계 뿐 아니라, 뉴스와 신문 등 다양한 매스 미디어에서도 많은 관심을 가지고 이를 다루고 있다. Goldberg가 1996년에 '인터넷 중독 장애(Internet Addiction Disorder, IAD)'라는 말을 처음 언급함으로써 시작된 인터넷 중독은 이제는 미국을 비롯하여, 영국, 대만 등 다양한 국가에서 연구가 이루어지고 있다. 한국도 이제 전세계 인터넷 인구 2억 7천만명 중 7위로 , 인터넷 인구수는 1,480만 명에 달하는 인터넷 강국으로 부상하고 있다. 또한 최근에는 전국 곳곳에 산재한 PC방을 통해서 누구나 인터넷을 이용할 수 있게 되었고, 광통신망의 발달로 각 가정에서 속도와 비용에 대한 걱정 없이 인터넷을 사용할 수 있게 되었다. 그러나 이와 동시에 지나친 인터넷 사용에서 오는 부작용도 늘어나고 있다. 많은 심리학자들이 보고하고 있는 바대로, 지나친 인터넷 사용은 일종의 중독 장애로 진단될 만큼 학업적, 직업적, 그리고 심리적 영역에 심각한 손상을 가져온다. (Brenner, 1997; Egger, 1996; Morahan-Martin & Schumacher, 1997; Scherer & Bost, 1997; Thompson, 1996; Young, 1999).
