문화해석학의 관점에서 분석한 폴 틸리히의 상관관계방법 (An Exploration of Paul Tillich’s Method of Correlation in terms of His Hermeneutics of Culture)

초록

종교와 문화의 관계설정 문제는 그리스도교 신학에 있어서 가장 중요하고 영속적인 문제 중 하나였다. 폴 틸리히는 종교와 문화의 관계설정 문제에 있어서 일생을 바친 신학자라 말해도 과언이 아닐 것이다.
문화신학자로서 그는 일생을 통해 세속문화안에서 그리스도교 메시지를 새롭고 창조적인 방식으로 전달하고자 노력하였다. 특별히 틸리히는동일한 개념을 다룸에도 철학적 개념과 신학적 개념 사이에 화해될 수없는 논리적 차이점들이 있다는 것을 주목하였다. 틸리히는 서로 구분되면서도 동일한 개념을 다루는 이 두 담론을 어떻게 연결시킬 수 있을까 고민하였고, 그 해답으로 소위‘상관관계방법’을 제시하였다. 이방법론의 핵심은 실존의 철학적 분석으로부터 기인한 문제에 그리스도교 메시지로부터 나온 신학적 대답을 제공하는 것이었다.
그러나 이러한 그의 시도는 많은 비판들을 받았다. 어떤 이들은 그의 방법론에서 철학적 질문들이 신학적 대답을 결정하고 있다고 비판하였고, 또 다른 이들은 신학적 대답으로부터 철학적 질문을 도출하고있는 것에 불과하다고 비판하였다. 그리고 또 다른 이들은 실상 틸리히가 주장한 것처럼 질문과 대답의 구별이 명확하지 않다고 비판하였다.
물론 이들의 비판들이 틸리히의 상관관계방법을 비판적으로 이해하는 데 도움이 되는 것은 사실이지만, 여기에는 심각한 한계점이 존재한다.
그것은 그들은 상관관계방법이 단순히 철학과 신학, 또는 질문과 대답을 상호연결하기 위한 단순한 방법론이 아니라, 인간의 실존과 창조물들에 종교적인 의미와 표현을 제공하기 위한 문화해석학임을 간과하고있기 때문이다.
이 논문은 틸리히의 상관관계방법을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 삼는다. 그러나 하나의 신학방법론으로서가 아니라 종교와 문화의 문제를포괄하는 문화해석학의 틀에서 분석하고자 한다. 이 작업을 위해 먼저I I장에서는 틸리히의 문화해석학의 핵심인 자율, 타율, 신율에 관하여분석을 할 것이며, I I I장에서는 틸리히의 상관관계방법의 핵심을 간단히요약한 뒤, 문화해석학의 관점에서 틸리히의 상관관계방법 이론에 주어진 비판들에 관하여 응답할 것이다. 이러한 과정들을 통하여 만일 우리가 틸리히의 상관관계방법을 문화해석학의 관점에서 살펴본다면, 틸리히의 상관관계방법은 종교가 세속문화에 관계하는데 있어서 여전히 가치 있고 영향력 있는 방법론임을 알 수 있을 것이라 주장할 것이다.

영어초록

How can Christianity understandably and persuasively reclaim its place in relation to religious skeptics, modern culture, and the secular world? This question of the relation of religion to culture has been a crucial and enduring question for Christians, not only in years past,but today, also. Paul Tillich is one of those Christian theologians who have seriously invested one’s life to examine the question of the relation of religion to culture. As a theologian of culture, through whole his lifetime, Tillich attempts to express the Christian message in new and insightful ways that appealed to the people in a secular world.
According to Tillich, there are some logical distinctions between concepts that are used philosophically and those that are used theologically,even when they are the same concepts. The problem for Tillich is how to relate these two separate but admittedly similar levels of discourse. The solution he proposes is through his method which he calls the “method of correlation.” The heart of this method is the correlation of questions raised by a philosophical analysis of existence with theological answers derived from the Christian message. However, there are many criticisms about his effort. Many have accused him of allowing the questions to predetermine the answers he gives. Some, on the other hand, think that he merely forges the questions in light of answers he has already predetermined. Also some theologians indicate the fact that questions and answers are not so much distinctive each other. Although these theologians’ i n t e rpretations of Paul Tillich’s method of correlation are helpful and informative, there is a significant limitation in their interpretations.
That is, they do not clearly see the fact that the method of correlation is not simply a method of mediating between philosophy and theology. Rather, it is a hermeneutics of culture to examine the cultural creations in which a human being expresses his or her cultural interpretation of existence. namely, the hermeneutics of theonomy.
In order to appreciate the nature and magnitude of Paul Tillich’s method of correlation, this paper begins with an exploration of Tillich’s hermeneutics of culture, a hermeneutics of theonomy (section I I). Then, in next section, I summarize the nature of the method of correlation then, present some criticisms on it with their validity (Section I I I). Through these procedures, I argue that Paul Tillich’s method of correlation is still a valuable method, if we appreciate it in terms of his hermeneutics of culture.
