판소리 사설에 나타난 관용적 지식 담론의 문화적 의미 (The Cultural Meaning of Formulaic Knowledge-DiscoursesFound in Pansori-saseol)

초록

본 연구는 그 간 삽입가요 혹은 단위사설이라 불리던 일련의 사설들 중 상당수가 관용적 지식의 형태로 판소리에 수용되어 있음에 착안하여 당대 지식 문화의 추이와 관련하여 새로운 관점에서 판소리의 문화적 위상을 드러내어 보는 것을 목표로 하였다.
이를 위해 우선 판소리 사설에 나타난 관용적 지식의 유형을 그 추상화의 수준 및 계층성, 전문성을 기준으로 하여 民俗 지식, 漢詩文 지식, 專門 지식 등으로 나누어 보았다. 판소리에 이러한 지식이 수용된 이유는 서사적 상황에 따른 이면을 제대로 그리고자 하는 의도와, 그러한 지식을 전유하던 계층의 권위에 기대어 공연적 소통에 있어 판을 휘어 잡으려는 창자의 작시 전략 때문이었다.
이러한 관용적 지식 사설이 판소리 작품 세계 속에서는 서술자 혹은 등장 인물들 간에 활용되어 그 지식의 권위적 속성에 기댄 특별한 담론적 효과를 발생시키고 있었다. 등장 인물이나 서술자가 중국 고사 속 인물의 행적을 끌어들여 전범에 호소함으로써 이견의 여지가 없게 하는 담론 효과를 드러내고 있는 것, 전문가가 전문 지식을 구사함으로써 상대로 하여금 그러한 지식에 압도당하게 하는 효과를 드러내고 있는 것 등이 그 예이다. 그러나 판소리 작품 속에는 그러한 지식의 전범성이 약화되거나 놀이 혹은 풍자로 변질되는 양상도 보이고 있었는데, 이는 또다른 계층의 해당 지식의 주체적 전유, 혹은 지식의 專有로부터 共有로의 변화라 부름직한 현상이었다. 하층의 실생활에 근거를 두던 민속 지식의 경우 그러한 지식을 구사하는 인물들의 삶을 하층 청중 자신들의 삶의 연속선상에서 바라보게 하는 효과를 갖게 했다. 그러한 지식은 오늘날 과학적 지식에 해당하는 것들도 적지 않았는데 당시 사대부 학자들이 이러한 류의 지식에 대해 적잖은 관심을 보인 것도 이 때문이었다.
이 세 유형의 지식은 각각 그 계층적 기반은 달랐으나 판소리 속으로 수용되면서 애초의 전유 계층을 넘어선 소통을 보이고 있었다. 이는 더 나은 삶을 갈망하며 새로운 지식을 추구하고 유통시키던 당대 지식 문화계의 동향과 밀접한 관련이 있었다. 판소리 공연장은 그러한 지식 문화의 교류 공간이기도 했던 것이다. 판소리의 탈계층적 특성은 이와 같은 측면에서도 확인해 볼 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

Taking note of the fact that many of pansori narrations, which were called pansori insert songs or unit narrations, were introduced to pansori in the form of idiomatic knowledge, this study purposed to examine the pattern of idiomatic knowledge in pansori narrations and, based on the results, to infer knowledge culture in those days and to understand the cultural standing of pansori.
For this, we first examined the types of idiomatic knowledge found in pansori narrations. According to the results of analyzing five pansoris extant, idiomatic knowledge was divided in terms of the level of abstraction, hierarchy, and professionalism into folk knowledge based on low‐class people’s experiences, Chinese poetic knowledge that was literati’s culture, and expert knowledge in specific areas. The primary reason for the introduction of these types of knowledge in pansori was that pansori was an epic performed by a single person. Depending on epical situation, the narrator had to be a professional geomancer or a professional medical doctor. Therefore, narrations containing such knowledge were necessary even for composing narrations fit for the reverse side. Furthermore, it was the narrator’s strategy to hold a dominant position in performance communication relying on the class that monopolized such knowledge.
In pansori, these knowledge narrations were utilized with maintaining the effect of discourse related to the authority of the monopolizing class but, on the other hand, some of them deviated from this pattern. In case of Chinese poetic knowledge, the general pattern was producing an indisputable effect of discourse by appealing to models through introducing phrases in Chinese poems or the records of people in Chinese ancient histories using the words of pansori characters or narrators. Sometimes, however, the representativeness of the models was weakened or degenerated into satires. Expert knowledge seems to originate not from literature but from songs or words restructured based on literature, and it was utilized with a strong discourse force in that it was practical knowledge. However, such knowledge was sometimes utilized to criticize or mock specific figures, and this suggests the occurrence of change in discourse utilization. Folk knowledge was based on low‐class people’s real life, and had the effect of identifying the characters of pansori with their low life of low‐class audience. However, some of folk knowledge contained the feature of expert knowledge and this is viewed as a phenomenon resulting from communication of knowledge among classes in those days.
The three types of knowledge had different class bases from one another, but as they were introduced into pansori they were communicated beyond their original monopolizing classes. This is believed to be closely related with knowledge culture in those days, which pursued a better life and new knowledge. It is because pansori was also a ground for exchanging knowledge culture. In this aspect as well, we can see the characteristic of pansori transcending classes and regions.
