판소리에서의 전통미학 패러다임의 변화 (The change of the traditional aesthetic paradigm in Pansori)

초록

이 글은 판소리의 미학적 성격을 사유체계의 변화라는 패러다임으로 접근함으로써 조선 후기 당시 성리학적 사유체계의 균열과 그 균열의 틈새에 들어온 새로운 사유체계들의 혼융 속에서 발생하고 성장한 판소리의 미학적 사유체계의 성격을 밝히고, 그것이 갖는 민족미학적 위상을 점검하고자 했다.
조선 후기 미학적 사유체계의 큰 변화는 기를 보는 관점의 변화에서 기인했다고 할 수 있다. 기를 물질로 간주하는 경향에 의해 물적 사유가 강화된 것이 그 하나였다. 조선 후기에 발생하거나 재음미된 실학과 서학, 도교, 그리고 무교 등을 통해 볼 때 조선 후기에는 물적 사유가 강화되면서 실물적인 사고와 실용주의적인 정신이 확산하였으며, 사물의 무차별성에 대한 인식을 통해 만물평등의 정신도 고양되었다. 기 일원론의 연장선 위에서 성 일원론이 등장함으로써 몸적 사유가 강화된 것이 조선 후기에 나타난 또 하나의 변화였다. 양명학이나 동학 등을 통해 볼 때 정신의 우월성과 육체의 열등성이 해체되고, 인간의 성에는 선악이 없다는 인식에 따라 인간의 정감의 세계가 차츰 인정되고 인간의 자연스런 욕망을 긍정하는 관점이 확산되었던 것이다. 이러한 미학적 사유체계의 변화는 그 시대에 등장하고 풍미했던 판소리문학에 투영되지 않을 수 없었다.
판소리에서 볼 수 있는 물적 사유와 몸적 사유의 공통점은 인간에게 자연스럽고 솔직한 사고방식이라는 점에 있다. 눈에 보이는 사물들을 순수한 시각을 통해 그대로 감각적으로 담아내려고 하는 물적 사유는 가식과 인위성을 배제하고자 하는 의식의 소산이다. 지성적 관념 작용을 통해 꾸미는 과정을 생략하고 인간의 자연스런 감정에 충실하고자 한 것이다. 몸적 사유는 인간의 본능적 욕망에 더욱 솔직하고자 한 것이다. 인간이 일상에서 욕망의 문제에 부딪쳤을 때 몸이 느끼는대로 사고하고 행동하라고 하는 것이 몸적 사유의 본질이기 때문이다. 그것은 지성적 사고 작용에 앞서 감성적 사고를 앞세우는 것이기 때문에 가식이나 위선이 없이 본능에 충실하게 된다. 물적 사유와 몸적 사유가 판소리에 두드러지게 기여하는 측면은 일상생활의 자연스러움을 구가하게 해준다는 데 있다. 그런 사유들이 판소리에서는 어떤 관념세계에서 일어나는 게 아니라 철두철미 실제 일상생활에서 부딪치면서 발생하기 때문이다. 그런 점에서 판소리의 물적 사유와 몸적 사유의 의의는 일상적인 자연주의를 보편화한 국면에서 찾아진다.
당대에 부상한 다양한 사유체계들에 기반하고 있는 물적 사유와 몸적 사유는 판소리에 적극적으로 수용되어 판소리의 자연주의의 성격을 더욱 부각시키고 있다. 일상적이고 생활적인 자연주의의 성격은 판소리가 이전 시대보다 더욱 강화시킨 미학적 국면이며, 후대에 다방면으로 유포시킨 미적 감각이다. 근대의 미술사학자들이나 미학가들, 그 중에서도 특히 고유섭의 한국미에 대한 진단을 보면 한국미의 자연주의적 성격은 좀더 층위별로 세분화될 필요가 있어 보이는데, 판소리에서는 그 다양하고 다방면의 자연주의적 성격이 문학과 음악에 걸쳐 밑바닥부터 체화되어 있음을 엿볼 수 있다. 이러한 점에서 판소리의 자연주의적 미학이 민족 미학에서 차지하는 위상은 아직은 개진하는 단계에 불과하지만 상당하다고 할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This takes the aesthetic character of Pansori into a paradigm of its changes in the thought system. During the late Chosun Dynasty, new thought systems were mixed with cracks in the Neo-confucianism. In the midst of these currents, it revealed the nature of Pansori’ aesthetic system, which occurred and grew up, and checked its national aesthetic status.
A major change in the aesthetic thought system in the late Chosun Dynasty can be attributed to the change in the way in which people think about Li(理) and Gi(氣). One is that material thinking has been reinforced by the tendency to regard Gi(氣) as a substance. In the late Chosun Dynasty, physical reasons were strenthened through Sil Hak(實學), Seo Hak(西學), Taoism(道敎), Shamanism(巫敎) etc., and they were reflected in practical thinking and pragmatic settlement. The spirit of equality in all things has also been enhanced through the recognition of the individuality of things. Another change was the increase in physical thinking as mind-monism(性一元論) emerged over the extension of Gi-monism(氣一元論). It was broken up the spirit of superiority and inferiority of the body through Yang Myung Hak(陽明學) and Dong Hak(東學). The recognition that human mind and body is not good and evil has led to the gradual recognition of the human world of affection and the positive view of human natural desires. This change of aesthetic thought system could be reflected in Pansori which appeared and grew up at that time.
The similarities between the material thinking and physical thinking of Pansori are natural and simple ways of thinking for humans. The material thinking of trying to capture things in a natural way, through a pure perspective, is a product of a consciousness to exclude pretense and artificiality. Its goal is to focus on the natural emotions of the human being and to skip the process of decorating with intelligence. Physical thinking is an attempt to be more honest with one’s instinctive desires. It is the essence of physical thinking that when a person encounters a problem of desire, one is asked to think and act the way the body feels. Material thinking and physical thinking contribute remarkably to Pansori, which is meant to promote the natural way of everyday life. Such thinkings do not occur in a certain world of ideology in Pansori, but they occur when they run into real life completely. In this sense, the significance of Pansori’ material thinking and physical thinking is found in a situation where it has generalized daily naturalism.
Material thinking and physical thinking based on various thought systems that emerged in the period are actively accepted by Pansori, reinforcing the naturalistic characteristics of Pansori. The nature of everyday and mundane naturalism is an aesthetic phase enhanced by Pansori more than ever before and is thought to be an aesthetic sensibility spread widely to future generations. In modern art historians and aesthetic scholars, especially Ko Yu-seop’s diagnosis of Korea’s aesthetic nature, the naturalistic characteristics of Korea’s aesthetic needs to be broken down further into sections. In Pansori, various and diverse naturalistic characteristics are represented from the bottem up through literature and music. In this respect, the naturalistic aesthetics of Pansori are considerable in terms of its status as national aesthetics.
