The Pharisees have been regarded as hypocrites and enemies of Jesus and early Christians. This traditional belief is so deeply rooted in the minds of people for a long time that we used it usually as a common noun to designate hypocrites. But a few scholars including Neusner, Sanders, Young lay the foundation to reexamine this belief fundamentally since the middle of last century. For example Neusner collected sources on the first century Pharisees and gave careful consideration to them. We can see rightly the true feature of the first century Pharisees owing to their studies. This paper tries to reexamine the traditional belief on the Pharisees from these new points.
On the contrary to the traditional belief the Pharisees were not strict legalists or hypocrites who stuck to the literal meaning of Torah and were not anxious to gain reputation. Instead they tried to reinterpret ritual regulations of Torah to decrease burdens of common people. For example they insisted that a bath could relieve those who were contaminated by contacting corpse or blood of uncleanness. Furthermore they didn't show strong hostility to Jesus. Instead they regarded Jesus as a companion or a new leader. So some of them including Nicodemus participated in the Movement of Jesus.
After the establishment of ‘Jerusalem Church’ a form of coalition between the Pharisees and the early Christians was formed. Gamaliel, the leader of the Pharisees vindicated actively apostles who were in a plight. And a number of Pharisees became members of Jerusalem Church. They made up the conservative party of Jerusalem Church and tried to maintain the belief of Judaism although they believed in Jesus as Messiah. So tensions and conflicts between them and the Grecian Jews was inevitable. Nevertheless we can not deny the fact that Jerusalem Church included a number of the Pharisees. This supported the hypothesis that the Pharisees and Jerusalem Church had friendly relations.
In conclusion we should reject the traditional belief on Pharisees. Most of them were not hypocrites or enemies of Jesus and Jerusalem Church.
