육성(肉聲)의 환상과 퍼스낼리티(personality)의 문화정치학 - 식민지기 대중 미디어에 게재된 인터뷰 기사 및 인물평을 중심으로 (The Verbal Fantasy and Cultural Politics of Personality - Focused On the Interview and the Personal Criticism of Media in the Colony)

초록

이 글은 식민지기 대중적으로 광범위하게 소비되었던 ‘인터뷰’라는 미디어 서사를 ‘육성 재현의 텍스트’로 정의하고, 그것이 기획하고 획득한 문화적 효과에 주목한다. 인터뷰라는 서사 양식의 특성이 제국 일본의 지배 담론 안에서 구현되는 양상을 구명함으로써, 식민지의 미디어 언어가 지니는 프로파간다적 성격을 밝히는 것이 이 글의 일차적인 목적이다. 또한 이 문제는 결국 ‘사실’과 ‘진실’의 경계를 교란시키는 인터뷰의 담론 전략이 수행되는 식민지 공론장의 질서와 그 인식론적 기반을 탐색하려는 시도와 맞닿는다. 이를 통해 ‘말할 수 있는 것’과 ‘말할 수 없는 것’에 대한 상상적인 분할을 통해 수행되는 인터뷰의 작동 문법이란, 식민지 조선에서 성립하는 공적 담론장의 허위성을 암묵적으로 전제하고 있는 조선인 독자들의 식민지적 (무)의식과 연동하는 것이었음을 밝히고자 한다.
우선 2장에서는 1920~1930년대 대중 미디어의 성장과 함께 확산된 인물평 및 일문일답기와 같은 서사 양식이 소비되는 양상을 살핀다. 이를 통해 인터뷰 양식이 특정 인물을 호명․재현함으로써 문명 및 계몽을 강조하는 공적 담론과, 개인과 가정의 ‘비밀’을 다루는 사적 담론 모두를 흡수하는 방식으로 유통되어 왔음을 밝혔다. 이어 3장에서는 명사 및 부호들의 인터뷰를 통해 식민정책에의 순응을 유도하는 성공 모델이 부조되는 장면을 분석한다. 이때 인터뷰는 인터뷰 대상의 공적 영역과 사적 영역 간의 모순을 통어하는 심급으로서의 ‘인격(personality)’을 상정하고, 이를 제국의 지배담론과 접속시키는 방식으로 식민담론의 정당화를 시도했다.
4장에서는 바로 이러한 인터뷰의 작동 문법이 식민 당국의 프로파간다 양식으로 활용될 수 있음을 일제 말기 미디어 정치의 사례를 통해 논증한다. 미나미 총독과 식민지 도지사들의 인터뷰 기사에서 시도된 서사 자원 및 재현 전략의 불균등한 배치는 당대 차별적인 식민관료 정책의 미디어적 구현이었으며, 전사한 지원병 유족과의 인터뷰를 비롯한 미디어의 각종 세리머니 또한 불합리한 전쟁으로 인해 발생하는 희생을 정당화하고 대중 정서를 조율하기 위한 미디어 전략의 일환이었다. 5장에서는 이같은 미디어 서사가 상정하는 ‘육성에의 환상’이 ‘해방’의 순간과 그 이후에도 지속적으로 관철됨으로써 식민지적 (무)의식을 지탱하고 있음을 두 가지 사례를 통해 환기하고자 했다. 1945년 8월 15일, 천황의 ‘옥음방송’은 ‘육성의 결정(結晶)’을 담지한 것으로 간주됨으로써 패전의 과오를 표백하는 방식으로 전후 일본의 멘탈리티를 주조했으며, 해방 이후 쓰여진 이광수의 「나의 고백」 또한 식민지 시기 발화되지 않은 ‘진심’을 상정하는 방식으로 친일의 알리바이를 성립시키고자 했다.

영어초록

This text defines “Interview”, a media narration which was commonly consumed in the colonial era, as a ‘text of verbal representation’ and also focuses on its cultural resonance it had planned and gained. As the text studies the aspect that the special qualities of narrative form, the interview, is represented under the dominant discourses of the empire Japan, it aims to verify the propagandism that the media language has. Moreover, it investigates the discipline of the discussion under the colonial milieu, where the strategy of discourse with the form of an interview is performed, which confuses the border of ‘the reality’ and ‘the truth’, and its accompanying epistemological basis. In other words, the text tried to make clear that the nature of the interview which was performed through the imaginative separation between ‘speakable’ and ‘unspeakable’ accompanies the reader's colonial (un)consciousness that is tacitly premised on the fallacy of the field of public mention in colonial Chosun.
Above all, the chapter 2 observes how the narrative form was consumed such as the personal criticism and a series of questions and answers which was expanded with the growth of public media in 1920~30s. As a result, the interview form had been distributed as it absorbed both of the public discourses and the private discourses; the former stressed civilization and enlightenment as it indicated and represented a certain person, and the later dealt with an individual and the ‘secret’ of a family. Succeedingly, on the chapter 3 analyses with the interviews of noted people and millionaires how the success story can be carved. Here the interviews introduced ‘personality’ as an interpreter between the public and privacy, and furthermore, it tried to justify the colonialism of the empire being connected itself with the control policy.
The chapter 4 demonstrates the example of media politic that the grammar of the interviews can be used as propagandas by the colonial authority. The unbalanced arrangement of the sources of the narration and the strategy for the representation both of which was tried in the interviews with the governor Minami and governors of the colony reflected the discriminative policy of colonial bureaucrats. Besides, each ceremony including the interviews with the war-bereaved families performed by media was also one of the strategies to justify the victims which came from irrational wars and to regulate emotions of people.
The fifth chapter tries to awake with a couple of examples that the ‘verbal fantasy’ that the media stressed supported colonial (un)consciousness as it was continuously carried out with the moment of ‘liberation’. In 1945, the fifteenth of August, ‘the King's voice’ of the empire Japan was considered as a fruit of a human voice and in this manner, ‘the King's voice’ made mentality of Japan after the Second World War as it bleached the fault of the defeated war. My confession written by Lee, Kwang-soo after the 1945 Liberation of Korea also tried to make an alibi as it supposed ‘sincerity’ that during the colonial era had not been yet mentioned.
