초록

The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effect of marital communication on the effect of fathers’ participation in parenting of infants and toddlers on mothers’ parenting stress. The subjects of the study were 307 mothers with infants and toddlers living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, and the mediating effect was verified using Pearson correlation analysis and Hayes’ (2013) Process macro Model 4. The results of the study showed that, first, the higher the father’s parenting participation, the less mother’s parenting stress was, and second, the higher the father’s parenting participation, the higher the couple’s communication. Third, in the effect of fathers’ parenting participation on mothers’ parenting stress, couples’ communication showed a complete mediating effect. Fathers of infants and toddlers need to participate more actively in parenting, and fathers’ guidance on the lives of infants and toddlers is very important to reduce mothers’ parenting stress. Since fathers’ leisure activities, life guidance, and housework activities improve marital communication and reduce mothers’ parenting stress, it is necessary to emphasize how to promote fathers’ participation in parenting and improvement of marital communication in the development of policies and systems for infants and young children, as well as research, education, and counseling programs.
