「귀츨라프의 중국연안 탐사기」로 통해 본 문화 접촉지대의 횡단자들 (Dualistic Position of Missionaries Who Crossed Cultural Contact Point Being Observed through ‘Exploration Record of Chinese Coast by Gutzlaff’)

초록

In this study, viewpoint of missionaries for southeast Asia and China and representation method were analyzed based on their travelogue carried on early edition of The Chinese Repository published in early 19c. Major analysis target was travelogue for eastern coast of China written by Gutzlaff and through this process, an effect of position of protestant missionaries who crossed cultural contact point on mediated interaction being performed for both cultures of east and west was observed.
Through this, a limitation of one-way civilization propagation model of propagating and accommodating culture among existing modernism discourse was indicated and furthermore, attention was paid to cultural convergence being taken place in a space where two heterogeneous cultures are contacted and practiced. For this objective, while taking notice of a concept of cultural contact, interactive and interfaced cultural negotiation including self-reflection of recognition principal being generated in contact point, adjustment of knowledge and internalization process for the counterpart was intended to be analyzed more deeply. Conclusively, it is considered that travelogue of Gutzlaff is not just containing geographical information for the East Asia but is a record of missionaries at that time showing dialogue methods with counterpart civilization symbolically.
