여성의 이주와 (탈)근대성 : ‘사진신부’ (Women’s migration and (post) Modernity : ‘Picture Bride’)

초록

이 논문은 근대 시기의 근대적 경험 가운데 여성의 이산자 경험을 검토한다. ‘근대적’이라 함은 동질적인 시대정신이 아닌 복합적이고 복수적이다. 무엇보다 근대적인 주체는 불온하고 미지의 영역을 동경한다. ‘근대적인 주체’는 일반적으로 남성적인 젠더화된 주체로 정의되며 여성은 남성 중심의 역사에서 배제되어 타자로서 항상 자리 잡는다. 한국의 근대성은 일본을 경유해서 들어와 서구와 경합하는 일제를 통해 굴절되었다. 그 속에서 전통, 민족, 근대, 근대는 서로 교차하면서 여성의 예속을 전형화 했다. 근대적인 현상 가운데 ‘이주’, 이동성(mobility)에 주목한다면 근대적인 주체의 자율성과 복수성을 볼 수 있다. 이동성은 자율적인 개인의 선택에 의해서 환경을 재구성하는 것이며 자유의 한 측면으로 여성들에게 새롭고 흥미로운 것이며 (탈)근대성에 대한 인식의 폭을 넓힐 수 있다.
일제 식민지배 동안에 기획된 ‘사진 신부’는 시간과 공간을 달리하여 아버지의 집 밖을 꿈꾸게 했다. 가부장제 하에서 ‘사진신부’는 미지의 땅을 동경하였고 자율적인 삶을 선택하는 행위를 선보였다. 월경(越境)하는 여성들의 행위 자체가 근대적인 주체성을 나타내며 그녀들의 고집 센 의지야말로 근대의 균질적인 시간에 균열을 냈다. 따라서 ‘사진신부’는 젠더, 성, 국가, 계급, 지역 등을 둘러싼 다양한 근대성의 이면을 드러낸다. 이러한 작업을 통해 ‘사진 신부’는 (탈)근대의 과정에서 몸으로 살아낸 자율적인 주체라는 사실에 주목할 수 있다. 이러한 작업을 통해 사진신부와 함께 또 다른 (여성) 이산자들을 조명하여 역사, 지리, 경제, 사회, 정치의 각 분야의 텍스트를 다양하게 융합시켜 근대적 이산자의 횡단이라는 정치가 근대성의 담론을 더욱 풍성하게 할 수 있다. 이 작업은 근대의 주체가 얼마나 복수적인지 그리고 근대성을 새롭고 다른 방식으로 정의하는 출발점이다.

영어초록

This paper attempts to explore modern epistemology in a new cognitive framework shedding light on woman’s diasporic experience among modern experiences. It aims to bring into light the plurality of modern subjects. ‘Modern’ means complicated and plural one not homogeneous Zeitgeist. Above all, ‘modern subject’ has mainly derived from rebellious and is yearning for the unknown land. Based on the assumption that ‘Modern Subject’ is generally defined as male gendered subject and women has always been placed as ‘the other’ excluded from male-centered society. Besides, the modernity of Korea has been distorted by the western and Japan by way of Japanese colonial rule. In the meantime, tradition, nation and modernity have cooperated surrounding the problem of women and constructed the stereotype of women’s subordination. If 'migration', or ‘mobility' ,which is one of the modern phenomenons, is to be paid attention to, modern subject’s autonomousness and plurality will be captured. Mobility is to reconstruct the environment by subject's autonomous choice and one of the aspects of freedom, and as such it is something new and exciting for women. And also, 'mobility' can widen recognition of modernity.
I locate my reading in the context of 'Picture Bride' analyzing two books, which address the history of 'Picture Bride'. The migration of women during Japanese colonial era brings into light their autonomous modern subjectivity. ‘Picture Bride’ was projected under the system of patriarchy and she dreamed a place beyond her father’s house across from the different time and space. It is “Picture Bride’ that yearned for the unknown land and chose her autonomous life. In short the activity of crossing the border represents the subjectivity of the modern time and it was her willful will that broke the homogeneous modern time. Therefore ‘picture bride’ reveals the background of modernity by gender, sexuality, nation, class, and region. Through this work, it noted that ‘picture bride’ is autonomous subject lived with her body in the process of (post) modern times. Along with picture brides, another (women) diaspora will be examined and enrich the discourses of modernity, fusing history, geography, economy, society and politics in various ways and looking into the diaspora(s)'s politics of crossing. And also, it is an attempt to discover how plural modern subjects can be and define modernity in a new and different way.
