엡스타인(N. Epstein)과 바우컴(D. H. Baucom)의 부부상담 모델과 기독교 통찰인지의 적용을 위한 논의 (A Discussion for the Application of Christian Meta-Cognitions in the Epstein and Baucom’s Couple Counseling Model)

초록

인지-행동적 부부상담 모델은 긍정적 부부 상호작용을 증가시키기 위해 부부들에게 의사소통 기술, 문제해결 기술과 같은 행동기술을 가르치고, 부부관계에 영향을 미치는 역기능적인 인지의 재구조화를 통해 부부관계를 기능적으로 변화시키려고 한다. 그러나 엡스타인(Epstein. N)과 바우컴(Donald. H. Baucom)의 인지-행동적 모델은 행동과 인지의 중재 외에도 개인과 부부관계를 둘러싸고 있는 환경과 맥락(개인의 성격과 동기, 미해결과제, 개인의 정신적 문제, 부부사이의 폭력, 약물이나 중독의 문제, 개인과 가족의 결여된 부분)의 요소를 고려하고, 부부가 속한 환경이 제공할 수 있는 강점을 극대화시켜 결혼만족도를 향상시키는 것이다. 엡스타인과 바우컴의 모델은 루터와 칼뱅으로 대표되는 개혁주의 신학을 통찰인지로 통합시켰을 때 더욱 강력한 상담도구로 교회에서 활용될 수 있다.
개혁주의 결혼신학에서도 엡스타인과 바우컴의 모델처럼 부부관계에 대한 결혼만족도를 향상시키는 것을 중요한 것으로 보고 있지만, 일차적으로는 가정 속에 한 여성(남성)의 배우자 됨이 하나님께서 자신에게 주신 소명임을 깨닫게 하여 상대 배우자를 섬기는 것의 중요성을 강조한다. 배우자로서 소명을 인식하게 되면 섬기는 자로서 배우자의 허물을 수용할 수 있는 변화가 일어나게 되어 결혼만족도와 결혼 안정성은 향상될 수 있다.
엡스타인과 바우컴의 모델에서 부부상담의 핵심매개는 전문적으로 훈련받은 상담자와 부부 간의 친밀관계 형성에 있었다. 그러나 개혁주의 신학의 관점에서는 부부문제의 해결과 치료는 교회공동체와의 유기적 관계 안에서 이루어진다. 부부상담은 상담목표가 달성되면 종결을 통해 상담자와의 관계가 끝나지만 결혼은 교회의 믿음 공동체와의 언약과 연합이기 때문에, 교회는 결혼의 형성, 유지, 해체, 자녀양육 등의 결혼생활 전반에 대해 부부들이 이 땅위의 삶을 사는 동안 상담활동을 통해 돌보는 직무가 있다. 그리고 부부들이 ‘자녀를 훈육하고 다스리는 직무,’ ‘배우자 신앙성장을 위한 조력의 직무,’ ‘축복된 결혼생활의 모델링의 직무’를 감당할 수 있도록 교회는 지속적으로 부부를 돌보고 양육해야 하는 직무가 있다.

영어초록

As an effort to increase experiences in positive husband‐wife interactions in the relationship with the spouse, the conventional cognitive‐behavioral couple counseling model attempted to change marital relationship functionally by teaching behavioral skills such as communication skill, problem solving skill, and anger management skill, and reframing dysfunctional cognitions influencing marital relationship. However, the new model of Epstein N. and Baucom D. H. aims to improve marital satisfaction by maximizing benefits provided by the environment to which the couple belongs in consideration of the environment and context surrounding the individuals and the couple (the individuals’ character and motives, unsolved tasks, the individuals’ mental problems, violence in the couple, drug or intoxication problems, defects in the individuals and family, etc.) in addition to the factors of the conventional cognitive‐behavioral model.
Like Epstein and Baucom’s model, the reformed theology of marriage also regards it important to improve satisfaction with marital relationship, but it believes that marital satisfaction is enhanced secondarily when a married couple realizes that it is a vocation given by God to be the spouse of a woman (man), to serve the spouse, and to carry out the tasks of ‘mutual growth of faith,’ ‘child rearing,’ and ‘blessed modeling of marital life.’ In Epstein and Baucom’s model, the key medium of couple therapy was in the formation of an intimate relationship between a trained professional therapist and the couple. From the viewpoint of reformed theology, however, the solution and treatment of marital problems are achieved within an organic relationship with the church community. In couple therapy, the relationship with the therapist terminates with the attainment of the goals of counseling, but marriage is a covenant and unity with the church as a community of faith, and for this reason, counseling activities by the church community are continued throughout the lifetime for every aspect of marital life including the formation, maintenance, and dissolution of marriage, and child parenting. What is more, although marriage is nothing to do with salvation, the church should counsel married couples with taking interest in their spiritual growth so that they may be sanctified through their marital lives.
