초록

「장가르」와 「게세르칸」 서사시는 몽골 유목민의 정체성을 표상하는대표적인 이야기이다. 몽골의 영웅서사시는 동북아시아 및 중앙아시아의 광범위한 지역에서 대중과 지속적으로 소통하며 그들의 구미에 맞춰 스스로를 변화시키는 데에 서슴지 않았다. 그 과정에서 당대의 가장혁신적인 미디어와 장르를 전략적으로 수용함으로써, 이야기의 신격화에서 게임화에 이르기까지의 다양한 변이형을 창출해 내었다. 이들 변이형들은 신화의 시기부터 현대에 이르기까지 꾸준하게 몽골 제민족의경외와 사랑을 받아왔다. 이는 몽골의 영웅서사시가 가지는 노마드적개방성 혹은 유연성을 보여주는 좋은 사례이면서 세계 각지에 흩어진몽골계 민족들의 문화적 연대감을 강력하게 유지해 주는 비결이기도하였다.
민족의 이합집산이 빈번했던 유목 사회에서 몽골 유목민들은 자신들의 정체성 상실과 혼란을 극복하고 끊임없이 새로운 환경에 적응해왔다. 영웅서사시는 몽골 유목민들 특유의 디아스포라 과정에서 당대민중들이 열망했던 가장 이상적인 영웅들의 이야기를 통해 그들 나름의 정체성을 견고히 하였다. 즉 몽골 유목민의 영웅서사시는 몽골계 제민족 집단의 공유된 기억으로 일깨워주는 역사적 신화로 기능하여 왔다고 할 수 있다.
이러한 맥락에서 게세르 서사시와 장가르 서사시 역시 각자의 방식으로 치열한 생존전략을 모색하며 그 문학적 생명력을 굳건하게 지켜온 셈이다. 특히 사방에서 몰려오는 역사적 도전과 비극적 운명 속에서서사시 속 몽골 유목민 민중들은 지속적인 투쟁과 연대를 반복하여 왔다. 이를 통해 신화적 정체성의 표상으로서 이상적인 국가인 ‘놀롬 평원’(Nolom tal-게세르), ‘아르 봄바’(Ar Bumba-장가르)를 재현함으로써보다 시대에 맞는 자신들의 정체성을 정립하고자 하였다.
한편 몽골의 영웅서사시는 신화적 스토리텔링의 원형을 성실하게고수하면서도 악기, 문자, 무대, 영상 등 시대별 주요 매체들을 적극 수용하면서 무궁무진한 판타지와 스펙터클을 동반한 구비문학 장르의 유산들을 차곡차곡 축적해 왔다. 이는 오늘날 문화원형콘텐츠의 큰 자산으로서 인터넷, 디지털, 가상현실(VR), 증강현실(AR)과 같은 현대 매체와의 접목을 통하여 새로운 유형의 콘텐츠를 지속적으로 창출할 수 있는 소재가 될 것이다.
이렇게 재창조된 몽골 유목민의 영웅서사시 콘텐츠는 장르적, 지역적, 시대적 경계를 초월하여 ‘탈경계’라는 새로운 노마디즘의 시대에미래 세대가 적응할 수 있는 문화정체성을 정립하는 주요한 대안으로제안될 수 있다.

영어초록

The Jangar, Geser Khan epics are representative stories of the Mongolian nomad, transformed into a wide variety of genres from a wide range of regions in Northeast Asia and Central Asia, communicating closely with the populace of each region and each era. The Mongolian heroic epic has constantly evolved, accepting the most innovative media and genres of that era, from the story deifying, and the story performing, and to the story gaming etc. The regional and genre openness of the Mongolian epic is closely related to the long-standing characteristics of nomadic culture that cross borders and boundaries.
In nomadic society where ethnic separating and gathering were frequent, Mongolian nomads constantly adapted to the new environment, overcoming the loss and confusion of their identity. In this process, these heroic epics become ‘historical myths’ that remind the mythological identity as ‘a shared memory of the community’ through the stories of the most ideal heroes aspired by the people of those days. In this context, the epic Jangar, which represented (mimesis) the tragic destiny of the Oirad people and the construction of the ideal nation (Ar Bumba) through their struggle and solidarity, represent the cultural identity of the Mongol heroic epic.
The Mongolian heroic epic is narrative literature that has been actively handed down to a wide variety of nomadic culture genres in the vast region of Northeast Asia. In other words, the various regional versions of Mongolian heroic epic represent the diversity of the ethnic cultures and their cultural identities of the Mongolian nomadic people scattered in various places that flexibly adapted and were created at each crucial time.
This aspect seems to have influenced the reorganization of cultural identity through the ‘shared memory of the community’ in which the other neighboring countries are represented by the myth of the hero through cultural exchange.
The story of the hero named ‘Jangar’, ‘Geser’ and ‘Dagina’ (Qatun) was beyond the scope of construction, constantly communicating with the populace, and not hesitating to change itself according to the modern sense. From the deity of the story to the game, various variants have been created, and the Mongol nomads have been steadily loved until now. This is a good example of the nomadic openness and flexibility of the Mongolian heroic epic.
The Mongolian epic embodies mythical storytelling genuinely while maintaining the main public media of the time such as musical instruments, medium of texts, stage (performing media), and images, and accumulating heritage of the literary genre with infinite fantasy and spectacle.
Today, it is a major asset of cultural prototype contents and it is a major driving force for continuously creating new types of storytelling contents by connecting with modern media (multimedia) such as Internet, digital, VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality).
The trans-boundary of Mongolian heroic epic, transcending regions and genres, will be an important alternative to form a new cultural identity of the 21st century neo-nomadism world culture beyond the national category for our future generations.
