이익의 사단칠정설과 성호학파의 사상적 분기 (Yi Ik’s Four-Seven Theory and Sungho School’s the Philosophical Branch)

초록

근기퇴계학파의 대표 인물인 성호星湖 이익李瀷(1681~1763)의 사단칠정설四端七情說에 나타난 특징과 여기에서 파생된 논점이 성호학파 내에서 어떠한 양상으로 나타나고 있는지를 살펴보고자 하였다.
우선 이익은 이황의 사칠설인 ‘사단리발기수지四端理發氣隨之’와 ‘철정기발이승지七情氣發理乘之’에 대해 새롭게 해석한다. 이익은 사단이 리발로 인한 리발기수라면, 칠정은 기발로 인한 리발기수라고 했다. 이것은 감정발현(감발感發)이 리가 주재하고 기가 따르는 리발기수로 동일하지만 그 감정발현의 원인이 성이 직발한 것인지 형기에 의해 성이 발한 것인지의 차이에 따라 달라진다. 리발과 기발이라고도 말한 것은 그러한 이유에서이다. 따라서 사단과 칠정을 리발과 기발이라고 한 것은 그 소종래가 다르다는 이황의 입장을 고수한 것이라면, 감정의 발현이 동일하다고 본 것은 이익 사칠설의 특징이다. 이러한 점은 기유대소설氣有大小說을 통한 기의 차별성과 이성이정一性二情 등 이익 심론에 나타난 일련의 특징에 근거하고 있음은 물론이다. 따라서 이익은 이황의 본의가 혼륜渾淪과 분개分開를 모두 내포하면서도 궁극적으로는 분개의 의미에 무게를 두고 있다고 강조한다. 그리고 이러한 점에서 보면 공칠정公七情은 리발이면서도 기발일 수 있는 여지가 있다고 생각했다.
이러한 이익의 주장에 성호학인星湖學人들은 크게 세 가지 입장에서 논의를 전개한다. 먼저 신후담과 이병휴는 이익의 견해에 이황의 본의를 새롭게 해석하고자 한다. 그들은 사단과 칠정이 그 근원은 같으나 실제 감정의 발현과정에서는 서로 다른 리와 기에 근거하고 있으며, 공칠정에 대해서도 공사公私개념을 통해 볼 때 형기에 근거하지 않으므로 리발이라고 강조한다. 반면 윤동규는 이황의 본의에 이익의 견해를 보완하여 이해하고자 하였다. 그는 이황의 본의가 분개에 있다고 전제하고 심의 지각이 성에 근거하면 사단이고 그렇지 않으면 칠정이라고 했다. 따라서 공칠정이 비록 중절한 칠정이기는 하지만 형기에서 비롯되었음은 부정할 수 없다고 보았다. 한편 안정복은 이황과 이익의 견해를 절충하고자 했다. 그는 리와 기의 관계를 혼륜과 분개로 절충하는 입장에서, 사단과 칠정을 리발기수지와 기발리승지로 정이 발함에 선한 사단과 선함과 불선함이 함께 있는 칠정이 되었다고 보았다. 그러나 사단에 이미 기가 따르고 있기 때문에 부중절이 있고 칠정에 리가 타고 있기 때문에 중절이 있을 수 있다고 했다. 이러한 점에서 공칠정 또한 기발이면서 리발일 수 있는 여지가 있다고 말한다.

영어초록

In this thesis, we shall see the character of Four-Seven Theory of Sung Ho Yi Ik(星湖 李瀷, 1681-1763), a delegate of Toegye School in Kunki District(近畿退溪學派), and try to consider about issue appears within SungHo School(星湖學派).
First, Yi Ik analysed in a new way about Yi Hwang’s Four-Seven Theories, Four Beginnings are the arousal of YI with KI following it(四端理發氣隨之) and Seven Emotions are the arousal of KI with LI riding on it(七情氣發理乘之). In other words, Yi Ik said if Four beginnings are Libalkisu caused by Libal, thenSeven feelings are also Libalkisu caused by Kibal. It means Libalkisu that Li leads emotional manifestation and Ki follows. But these can be changed from differentiation of reasons between emotional manifestation is directly cause Sung(性) or indirectly cause Sung by Hyungki(形氣). For that reason, he mentioned Libal and Kibal. Therefore we can say the idea of Four beginnings and Seven feelings are Libal and Kibal which separated by different Sojonglae(所從來) follows Yi Hwang’s thought, the idea which insist appearances of emotions are originally same is the character of Yi Ik’s Four-Seven theory. This work certainly based on a series of character appears based on Yi Ik’s Mind theory, IlSeongYiJeong(一性二情, one Xing two Qíng) and differences of KI through KIYouDaeSo theory(氣有大小說). Therefore Yi Ik emphasized Lee Hwang was ultimately to put meaning of separate development even his words are connoted with mutual permeation(渾淪) and separate development(分開). And In this opinion, he thank there is a possibility Gong Seven Emotions(公七情) can be KiBal and LiBal at the same time.
For this Yi Ik’s opinion, SungHo Scholar developed with three positions. First, Shin Hoo-dam(愼後聃) and Lee Byeong-hue(李秉休) tried to newly interpret what Lee Hwang’s words are originally meant on Yi Ik’s view. They emphasized Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions are originally same, but in exposing process of real emotions are based on between separated LI and KI, and also, Gong Seven Emotions, which are not based on HyungKI, are Libal for through GongSa(公私, public private) concept. But, Yoon Dong-kyu(尹東奎) tried to understand Yi Hwang’s original opinion complemented with Yi Ik’s view. He premised Yi Hwang’s original opinion came from separate development, and said when mind came from Sung is pretended Four Beginnings but if not, it pretended Seven Emotions. Thus, he saw it cannot be deniable that Gong Seven Emotions are came from HyungKI although these are properly responded Seven Emotions. Meanwhile, Ahn Jeong-bok(安鼎福) tried to compromise views of Lee Hwang and Yi Ik. He’s idea situated on compromising relations between LI and KI to separate development and mutual permeation, Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions are became good Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions with good and not good by expose of Jung from the arousal of LI with KI following it and the arousal of KI with LI riding on it. But also he said, improper response because KI already follows Four Beginnings and proper response because LI rides on Seven Emotions. In this opinion, he said there is a possibility Gong Seven Emotions can be KiBal and LiBal at the same time.
