판소리 <적벽가>의 형성과 향유층에 대한 再論 (Reconsidering the Formation of Pansori “Jeokbyeokga” and Its Audience)

초록

판소리 <적벽가>는 <춘향전>과 같은 판소리가 유행하자 이후 향유자들이 당시 유행하던 <삼국지> 중 가장 유명하고 재미있는 대목인 적벽대전을 중심으로 만든 것으로 다른 판소리와는 그 출발이 달랐다. 특히, 대부분의 판소리는 민중들과 소통 가능한 무가 혹은 설화에서 출발했지만 <적벽가>는 완성된 소설에서 기원했기 때문에 이야기 변형에 제약이 따랐다. 더욱이 판소리가 房中樂으로 변하면서 향유층은 광대를 부를 수 있는 재력가로 제한될 수밖에 없었다. 따라서 판소리 <적벽가>는 애초에 경제력이 있는 남성 향유자들의 요구에 의해 이야기가 덧붙여지면서 발전했다.
그렇기 때문에 ‘군사설움타령’을 통해 가난한 하층민을 대변하여 민중문학으로서의 가치를 논하는 것은 이 작품이 가지는 특수성을 간과한 것이다. 왜냐하면 이들 병사들은 초기에는 가난했을지 몰라도 열심히 가산을 일구어 먹을 것 걱정 없이 집에 사당을 두고 조상의 제사를 받들어 모시는 경대부의 예절을 따르며 살아가는 사람들이다. 따라서 이들은 나름의 자본을 축적한 사람들로 어떻게 보면 하층민에게는 지배층이다. 그런데 왜 이들은 자신들을 꾸짖고 희화화하는 판소리를 향유한 것일까? 그것은 勸分이라는 명목으로 饒戶勒奪을 당했기 때문이다.
특히, 향리였던 신재효가 정리한 <적벽가>에는 경제적으로 넉넉한 병사들과 조조를 꾸짖고 희화화하는 대목이 많다. 하지만 다른 창본에는 이러한 내용이 덜하며, 특이한 것은 더늠을 통해 유비의 愛民이 드러난다는 것이다. 이것은 판소리 <적벽가>가 경제적 여유가 있는 향유자들을 위해 때론 자신들을 대변하고, 때론 민란과 외세의 침략 등 시대적 요구를 드러내면서 변모되어 왔기 때문이다.

영어초록

Pansori “Jeokbyeokga” (Song of the Red Cliffs) has a different origin that sets it apart from the other pansori pieces, which had generally been generated by combining folk tales with songs and included the public consciousness from the onset. When pansori such as “Chunghyangga” gained their popularity, with the growing demand from the audience, the most famous and intriguing part from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms had been extracted and combined with songs to be created as pansori. Also, as pansori developed into a home entertainment, the audience became limited to the wealthy who could invite the entertainers home. Thus, “Jeokbyeokga” developed by adding stories that responded to the demands of the wealthy male audiences.
To discuss its value as a popular literature that represents the impoverished lower class through “The Soldier’s Lamentation” (Gunsa seorum taryeong) is, therefore, to overlook the particularity of this pansori piece. While these soldiers may have been impoverished at first, they have worked hard to make their fortune and were living by the proprieties of the ministers and high officials without any worries about making ends meet. Hence, to the famished lower class, these people, who have somehow accumulated wealth, were part of the ruling class. Then, why did these people enjoy pansori that rebuked and made a caricature of themselves? Because the rich had become the target of exploitation by the local officials as the wealthy households were forced into sharing their wealth under the pretext of poor relief.
In particular, the version of “Jeokbyeokga” organized by Shin Jae-hyo, who was a local clerk, contains a number of parts that rebuke and ridicule wealthy soldiers and General Cao Cao. Yet, other versions of this pansori piece include less of such content and display Liu Bei’s love for the people through deoneum, new parts of a pansori song inserted and revised by master singers to add their individuality. It is because “Jeokbyeokga” has undergone transformations to at times represent the wealthy audience, and at others to reflect the demands of the times that had been triggered by rebellions and foreign invasions.
