초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 도서관 건축은 2000년대에 접어들며, 인터넷의 대중화와 서고 중심의 일반적인 도서관 건축물로 인해 이용자의 발길이 현저히 줄었다. 이러한 사회적 변화에 따라 도서관의 물리적 시설 확충에 집중하였으나, 연간 이용률은 감소하였다. 그와 함께 도서상업공간의 공공적 대중화로 인해 도서관 건축의 필요성은 위협받고 있다. 따라서, 사회적 변화를 수용할 수 있는 도서관의 건축적, 공간적 변화가 필요하다고 판단되며, 특히, 이용자 중심의 건축 및 공간디자인 변화에 대한 고찰이 필요하다. 이러한 현대 도서관의 건축적, 공간적 변화 고찰을 위해 이용자 중심의 도서관 건축으로 주목받고 있는 미국 로스엔젤레스 소재 존슨 파바로 아키텍츠의 도서관 사례를 선정 및 분석하고자 한다. 이를 통해 이용자 중심의 공간 및 디자인 변화를 파악하고, 국내 도서관 건축 디자인 방향을 제시하고자 한다. (연구범위 및 방법) 본 연구는 이용자 중심의 현대 도서관 건축의 공간구성 및 디자인 방향 고찰을 위해 미국 존슨 파바로 아키텍츠의 도서관 작품을 중심으로 고찰한다. 연구의 공간적 범위로는 존슨 파바로 아키텍츠의 도서관 건축물 중 우수한 사례로 수상 또는 선정된 3개(웨스트 할리우드 도서관, 코스타메사 도널드 던건 도서관, 리버사이드 도서관)를 대상으로 공간구성(연계성, 개방성)과 디자인 특성 측면으로 구분하여 고찰한다. (결과) 분석 결과는 첫째, 존슨 파바로 아키텍츠의 도서관 건축은 공통적으로 이용자 중심의 디자인 요소들이 확인되었다. 시각적으로 사로잡는 입면 디자인은 단순히 디자인적 요소가 아닌 리딩 라운지 등 이용자 특성을 고려한 공간 결합형 입면 디자인이라는 점이 우수하다. 둘째, 내부 열람공간의 쾌적성을 고려한 이용자 열람공간 및 중심형 계단이다. 외부와 접한 공간은 이용자 만족도가 높은 리딩 라운지로 배치하고 업무영역은 내부 중심으로 배치하였다. 또한, 수직적 개방 및 천창을 통해 자연채광 유입이 가능한 중심계단은 이용자 시각적, 물리적 접근이 용이한 곳에 계획한 점이 우수하다. (결론) 본 연구는 존슨 파바로 아키텍츠의 이용자 중심의 도서관 건축 사례를 통해 사회적 변화와 이용자 특성을 반영한 현대 도서관 건축의 디자인 방향을 제시하고자 하였다. 앞선 연구결과를 통해 국내 도서관 건축 디자인 가이드라인 및 계획 단계에서 활용되길 기대한다.

(Background and Purpose) Library architecture entered the 2000s, and the number of users decreased significantly due to the popularization of the Internet network service and general library architecture centered on books. With these social changes, the focus was on expanding the library's physical facilities, but the annual usage rate decreased. At the same time, the need for library construction is being threatened due to the publicness of commercial spaces. Therefore, it is judged that architectural and spatial changes in libraries that can accommodate social changes are necessary, and in particular, it is necessary to consider changes in user-oriented design. To examine the architectural and spatial changes of modern libraries, the case of Johnson Favaro Architects in Los Angeles, United States, which is attracting attention as a user-oriented library architecture, is selected and analyzed. The purpose of this study is to identify user-oriented design changes and to present a direction for domestic library architecture design. (Method) This study focuses on library works by Johnson Favaro Architects to examine the spatial composition and design direction of user-oriented modern libraries. As for the spatial scope of the study, three of Johnson Favaro Architects' libraries (West Hollywood Library, Costa Mesa Donald Dungan Library, Riverside Main Library) that were awarded or selected as excellent examples are considered by dividing them into spatial composition and design characteristics. (Results) The results of the analysis are as follows: First, the library architecture of Johnson Favaro Architects has common user-oriented design elements. The visually captivating elevation design is not simply a design element but is excellent in that it is a space-integrated elevation design that considers user characteristics such as a reading lounge. Second, it is a user reading space and a central staircase considering the comfort of the internal reading space. The space facing the outside is arranged as a reading lounge with high user satisfaction, and the work area is centered inside. In addition, the central staircase, which allows natural light to flow in through vertical connects and skylights, is excellent in that it is planned in a place where users have easy visual and physical access. (Conclusions) This study aims to suggest a design direction for modern library architecture that reflects social changes and user characteristics through the example of a user-oriented library architecture by Johnson Favaro Architects in Los Angeles, United States. The results of the previous study, it is expected to be utilized in the domestic library architectural design guidelines and planning stage.
