초록

강만길은 1974년 실학의 근대성론 비판을 통해 ‘분단시대’라는 개념을 제기한 후, 분단 극복의 역사를 근현대사 속에서 실증하는 작업에 매진해 왔다. 그는 “민족분단의 역사를 청산하고 통일민족국가의 수립을 민족사의 일차적 과제로 삼는 시대”를 ‘분단시대’로 규정하는 한편, 식민 극복과 통일이라는 과제를 수행하는 민족운동의 주체적인 흐름을 중심으로 민족해방운동사를 재구성했다.
강만길은 첫째, 독립운동을 단지 일제로부터의 독립만을 목표로 하는 항일운동이 아니라 새로운 근대국가를 건설하기 위한 민족국가 건설운동으로 자리매김했다. 둘째, 사회주의운동을 민족국가 건설운동의 일주체로서 복권시켰다. 셋째, 일제시기 민족국가 건설운동이 좌우노선으로 분립되어 있는 것만이 아니라 통일전선을 형성하기 위한 끊임없는 투쟁의 과정이었다는 점을 실증했다. 이는 민족해방운동사를 식민과 분단을 극복하기 위한 근대민족국가 건설운동이자 통일민족국가수립운동으로서 체계화한 작업이었다.
강만길의 연구는 남북이 일제시기 민족운동을 전유하고, 통일의 주역으로서 자임하는 분단국가주의적 인식을 극복하기 위한 치열한 고투의 과정이었다. 그의 연구를 계기로 한국의 민족해방운동사에는 통일전선의 역사가 공식 역사로 기록되었고, 통일전선과 통일운동 연구도 활성화되었다. 이는 그가 분단의 역사를 인식할 뿐 아니라 통일을 지향하는 실천적이고 수행적인 연구자로서 시대와 대중과 호흡하면서 역사학의 길을 열어 갔기 때문에 가능한 작업이었다.

After criticizing the modernity theory of Silhak in 1974 and introducing the concept of the "Division Era," Kang Man-gil devoted himself to empirically establishing the history of overcoming national division within modern Korean history. He defined the "Division Era" as "an era that prioritizes eliminating the history of national division and establishing a unified nation-state as the primary task of national history." At the same time, he sought to reconstruct the history of national liberation movements by focusing on the subjective flow of national movements that carried out the historical tasks of overcoming colonialism and achieving unification.
First, Kang positioned the independence movement not merely as an anti-Japanese movement aimed solely at independence from Japanese imperialism, but as a movement to establish a modern nation-state. Second, he restored the socialist movement to its rightful place as a principal actor in the nation-building movement. Third, he empirically demonstrated that the nation-building movement during the Japanese colonial period was not simply divided between left and right political lines but was an ongoing struggle to form a national united front. This work systematized the history of the national liberation movement as both a modern nation-building movement and a unified nation-state establishment movement aimed at overcoming colonialism and division.
Kang Man-gil's research represented an intense struggle to overcome the divided state nationalism where both North and South Korea appropriated the colonial-era national movements and claimed to be the legitimate leaders of unification. Through his research, the history of the united front was officially recorded in Korea's national liberation movement history, and research on united front and unification movements was revitalized. This was possible because he not only recognized the history of division but also opened up a path for historical studies while engaging with his era and the public as a practical and performative researcher oriented toward unification
